Iraq Executes 10 Sentenced on Terrorism Charges

Baghdad—The Iraqi authorities carried out the death sentence against 10 people convicted of terrorism crimes, according to what the French news agency AFP reported from informed sources. This comes in the latest execution of death sentences against those convicted of terrorism-related cases in the country.

The sources reported that the sentences were implemented against the convicts after judicial death sentences were issued on the grounds of terrorism crimes. This comes within the framework of the Iraqi authorities implementing judicial rulings related to those convicted in these cases.

The implementation of the sentences comes at a time when the Iraqi authorities continue to pursue those convicted of crimes linked to ISIS. The Iraqi forces have waged extensive military operations against the organization over the past years.

Iraqi laws impose the death penalty for a number of crimes, including terrorism and murder. While the process of implementing the judgment requires completing judicial and formal procedures before issuing the execution order. Moreover, the Iraqi Code of Criminal Procedure stipulates that the death sentence shall not be carried out except after a presidential decree is issued to that effect.

The Iraqi authorities have previously carried out mass death sentences against those convicted of terrorist crimes. Among them are ten convicts who were executed in a prison in the city of Nasiriyah in July 2024, according to security sources quoted by Reuters.

Previous mass executions in Iraq sparked criticism from human rights organizations. This was especially true regarding the trials of terrorism cases and the widespread use of the death penalty.

In September 2024, Agence France-Presse reported the execution of 21 convicts, most of them on terrorism-related charges and for belonging to ISIS, at al-Hout prison in Nasiriyah.

Iraqi authorities continue to carry out death sentences issued by the judiciary against those convicted of terrorism-related crimes, while the use of the death penalty in the country remains a subject of international human rights debate.
