Suspect in fatal Tennessee store shootings faces death penalty

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of killing clerks at two different stores in Tennessee over a three-day crime spree was arraigned in Crockett County Circuit Court Wednesday.

District Attorney Frederick Agee told Judge Clayburn Peeples that the state will be seeking the death penalty against Corey Houge for the shooting death of Shahed Rana Moshsin, 36.

Mohsin was killed during a robbery at the Safari Corner Market in Bells Sunday morning.

Houge is charged with one count of First Degree Murder, one count of First Degree Murder in Perpetration of a Felony, one count of Especially Aggravated Robbery, four counts of Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Houge is also facing charges in Jackson in the shooting death of Suresh Patel at a liquor store last Thursday.

The Jackson Police Department said on August 20th, just before 9:00 p.m., a masked gunman, later identified as Houge, entered Ridgecrest Cellars at 2880 Ridgecrest Road and demanded money from the three employees working at the business.

After the employees turned the money over to the gunman, the suspect shot Patel multiple times and fled the business.

JPD said utilizing the recovered video and Flock, a Buick Lucerne was identified as a potential suspect vehicle, and Corey Houge was developed as a potential suspect.

Sunday afternoon, investigators with the Jackson Police Department, FBI, and ATF located Corey Houge driving his Buick Lucerne in the area of Lawrence Switch Road near Highway 70 in Jackson.

The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but said Houge fled at a high rate of speed, crashed in front of a Burger King on Christmasville Road, and attempted to carjack a customer.

In Madison County, Houge is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of a felony, especially aggravated robbery, multiple counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony with a prior felony conviction, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He faces that prospect because the state has been enjoined from using nitrogen hypoxia , the alternative execution method he preferred, to put him to death. Having failed to show that its nitrogen hypoxia protocol is constitutionally acceptable, Alabama wants a do-over to force Lee to die by lethal injection as a result of its own failure. It should not get one. Alabama should only be able to put Lee to death if it can fix nitrogen hypoxia’s constitutional defects.
