Oklahoma | Jury trial for murder defendant Richard Glossip reset to December

The third murder trial for former death row inmate Richard Glossip has been reset to December.

Glossip, 63, remains free on a $500,000 bond that was posted in May with help from celebrity Kim Kardashian.

Glossip is accused of paying to have his boss, Barry Van Treese, an Oklahoma City motel owner, beaten to death in 1997 to keep from being fired for embezzlement. He was the motel's manager.

He has always maintained his innocence.

Glossip is getting a third trial because the U.S. Supreme Court last year reversed his 2004 murder conviction on prosecutorial misconduct grounds.

The jury trial was set to begin Sept. 28 in Oklahoma County District Court. It now is set to begin Dec. 7. It is expected to last two weeks.

Defense attorneys asked for a delay. They told the judge they still do not have all the information from prosecutors necessary to prepare. They also have brought up evidentiary and witness issues.

Prosecutors agreed to a delay because a key witness was unavailable in September. District Judge Natalie Mai met with attorneys July 27 to reset the trial.

Glossip is no longer facing the death penalty. In 2015, he came within hours of being executed at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

The lethal injection was called off after a doctor realized a pharmacist supplied the wrong heart-stopping drug.

Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 10:13 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He was put to death by lethal injection for the murder of his common-law wife in 2003 at their Oklahoma City home. He admitted to police he shot her twice during an argument. Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, did not fight for his life, stunning his attorneys in July when he told the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board that he didn't want clemency. "It's time for me to pay for what I did," he said.
