Gurung said he understood the outrage and calls for the death penalty following the incident but noted that Nepal’s Constitution prohibits the provision of capital punishment.
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has expressed sorrow over the heinous crime committed against a girl in Bara, saying that no weakness will be allowed in the investigation into the incident.
Gurung said in a social media post on Saturday morning that he was “extremely saddened and shocked” by the incident. “The pain of such a crime committed against a young girl is not just the pain of one family; it is the pain of our entire society,” he wrote.
According to Home Minister Gurung, those accused in the incident have already been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. He said that after serious questions were raised over alleged negligence by the police in the initial stage, the process of investigation and action against the police officials concerned has also been initiated.
He also mentioned that 4 more people had been arrested for investigation after the girl’s parents filed a complaint.
Gurung said he could understand the outrage over the ongoing demand for the death penalty following the incident but stated that Nepal’s Constitution prohibits the introduction of the death penalty.
“Subsection 2 of Article 16 of the Constitution prohibits the enactment of laws providing for the death penalty,” he wrote.
Stating that the Home Administration’s primary responsibility was to conduct an impartial and robust investigation, he said the government was focused on ensuring that “the guilty do not escape and the victim receives justice.”
Gurung also urged people not to politicize the incident or conduct a “media trial” based on unverified information. “Your outrage and actions that influence the investigation and judicial process could ultimately weaken justice itself,” he wrote.
