Iran | Executions in Shiraz, Semnan, Rasht

Iranian authorities have executed at least two prisoners, identified as Shafi Shokati and Ali Zibaei, at Shiraz Central Prison (Adelabad Prison) and Semnan Central Prison. The two men had been sentenced to death in separate cases involving murder and drug-related charges.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Shafi Shokati, a 39-year-old Baloch man and father of four, was executed at Shiraz Central Prison at dawn on August 24, 2026.

Sources familiar with the case said Shokati was from Iranshahr and lived in Shiraz. He was arrested seven years ago on a murder charge and subsequently sentenced to death under Iran’s qisas (retributive justice) laws.

A day earlier, on August 23, Ali Zibaei, a 48-year-old man and father of two, was executed at Semnan Central Prison. Zibaei, from Semnan, had been arrested four years earlier on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death.

Iranian state media and judicial authorities have not publicly announced either execution.

Execution in Rasht

Iranian authorities have executed Behrouz Souri, a prisoner from Kuhdasht who had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges, at Lakan Prison in Rasht.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Souri, 40, from Rumeshkan in Kuhdasht, Lorestan province, was executed at Lakan Prison in Rasht at dawn on August 11, 2026.

Souri was arrested in 2022 on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary.

Iranian state media and judicial authorities have not publicly announced his execution.

Oklahoma executes Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez

Oklahoma has carried out 1 of 3 executions set for the same day in the United States in another sign of the resurgence of the death penalty in the country. Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 10:13 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He was put to death by lethal injection for the murder of his common-law wife in 2003 at their Oklahoma City home. He admitted to police he shot her twice during an argument. Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, did not fight for his life, stunning his attorneys in July when he told the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board that he didn't want clemency. "It's time for me to pay for what I did," he said.
