DPN — Iranian authorities executed two men at dawn Monday on charges of espionage and cooperation with Israel’s Mossad intelligence service, the judiciary’s official news outlet reported.
The men, identified by the Mizan news agency as Mohammad Masoum Shahi and Hamed Validi, were hanged following convictions for "moharebeh" — or waging war against God — and collaboration with "the Zionist regime." The executions were carried out after the country’s Supreme Court upheld their death sentences.
According to a report from state broadcaster IRIB, the two were accused of belonging to a spy network that received advanced training abroad, including in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Prosecutors alleged the men were trained in secure communications, the identification of sensitive military locations, and the production of explosive devices. They were further accused of carrying out arson attacks at military and public sites and sending footage of the incidents to handlers in exchange for cryptocurrency payments.
The hangings come during a period of heightened regional tension and a surge in capital punishment within the Islamic Republic. Advocacy groups, including the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), identified the men as political dissidents and claimed they were arrested in Tehran in May 2025. These groups have raised concerns regarding the timing of the judicial proceedings, alleging the men were subjected to torture and lacked due process.
Iran remains one of the world's most prolific users of the death penalty. While Tehran frequently announces the capture and execution of alleged foreign agents, human rights organizations argue that such charges are often used to target domestic political opponents.
The Iranian judiciary has recently urged courts to expedite verdicts in security-related cases, leading to what activists describe as a "wave of executions" following a period of direct conflict and a fragile, mediated ceasefire that has been in place since early April.
