HENDERSON, Nev. (DPN) — A Henderson woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars after admitting to the drowning deaths of her two young children, according to court records and local authorities.
Jovan Trevino, 33, reached a plea agreement with Clark County prosecutors to avoid a potential death sentence. Under the terms of the deal, Trevino pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and waived her right to a trial.
The case dates back to June 2021, when Henderson police responded to a residence following a 911 call regarding the welfare of a family. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of Trevino’s children: her 1-year-old son, Gionni, and her 4-year-old daughter, Giana.
According to the arrest report, Trevino fled the scene and was later apprehended at a hospital in Arizona. During interviews with detectives, authorities say she provided a detailed confession, describing the circumstances that led to the children's deaths.
Investigators revealed that Trevino had been struggling with severe mental health issues and a history of depression. In her statement to police, she detailed a harrowing sequence of events in which she used medication to induce sleep before drowning the children in a bathtub.
"This is a tragedy that has left a permanent scar on this community," said a spokesperson for the Henderson Police Department during the initial investigation. "There are no winners in a case of this magnitude."
The decision to accept a plea of life without parole was made in consultation with the children's father and extended family. Prosecutors noted that the agreement ensures Trevino will never be released while sparing the family the trauma of a protracted trial and the lengthy appeals process often associated with capital punishment.
At the sentencing hearing, family members provided emotional victim impact statements, remembering Gionni and Giana as vibrant children whose lives were cut short far too soon. Trevino’s defense team pointed to her documented history of psychiatric crises leading up to the incident, though they acknowledged the severity of the crimes necessitated the life sentence.
Trevino is currently being held at the Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center.
