The authorities of Iran proceeded to execute a man accused of spying for Israel, Mizan, the Iranian judiciary's official news outlet, reported on Wednesday that the convicted man had been identified as Ali Ardestani.
According to Mizan, the death penalty was carried out after approval by the Iranian Supreme Court and "in accordance with legal procedures." The man had been convicted of providing information deemed sensitive to the Mossad, the Israeli foreign intelligence service.
Iran and Israel have been engaged in a decades-long, indirect confrontation marked by recurring accusations of intelligence operations, sabotage, and targeted assassinations.
Tehran regularly claims to be dismantling networks it presents as being linked to Israeli intelligence services.
Iranian authorities have repeatedly executed people accused of spying for Israel, cases which have drawn sharp criticism from international human rights organizations, which denounce the lack of transparency in judicial proceedings and the extensive use of the death penalty.
According to Iranian media, the number of executions for alleged espionage on behalf of Israel has increased in recent months.
This development comes amid heightened tensions following a direct confrontation in June, when Israeli and American airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, according to Tehran.
Iranian authorities claim that these measures are part of protecting national security, while Israel generally does not comment on accusations of espionage made by Iran.
