Former death row inmate Richard Glossip appeared in court as his attorney expressed optimism about his potential release.
Glossip appeared in court Monday before Judge Natalie Mai, who is now overseeing his case. His attorney expressed optimism about the possibility of his release based on a 2023 agreement with the attorney general.
Two court dates have been set for Glossip, one to potentially set bond and another to discuss an agreement between the attorney general and Glossip's attorney, which could lead to his release.
"We were happy with the way things came out. We have dates now set, and we’re ready to move forward," Don Knight, Glossip's attorney, said.
Glossip, who has spent nearly three decades behind bars and survived nine execution dates, is being retried for first-degree murder after his initial conviction was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court last February.
He will appear in court twice in February, first to request a bond, which the state has not yet responded to, and second for a hearing where Knight plans to call the attorney general to testify.
"We filed a motion to enforce what’s called a release dismissal agreement. That’s the agreement that we reached with the attorney general back in April 2023," Knight said.
This agreement, reported by KOCO in July, said that Glossip would plead to a lower charge and be released based on the time he has already served.
"Pretty definitive agreement. He responded, ‘We are in agreement,’ so we’re going to have a hearing on that," Knight said.
The attorney general's office did not respond to requests for comment on the hearing.
When asked about the future of the case, Knight said, "Honestly, we don’t think there will be a trial date. We think this motion we have filed will be granted and Mr. Glossip will be free in February."
Glossip's attorneys and the state have indicated they plan to file several motions in the case, which could alter the timeline for these hearings.
Currently, Glossip is expected in court for the bond hearing on Feb. 12.
