Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 9, 2025: Shahriar Dehvari, a Baluch man on death row for murder, was executed in Babolsar Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Babolsar Prison on 7 September 2025. His identity has been established as Shahriar (Ahmad) Dehvari, a Baluch man sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

An informed source told IHRNGO: “Shahriar was arrested in the Spring of 2023 for the murder of two people in Fereydounkar. According to his family, he was on the road from Saravan to Babolsar at the time of the murders but the court ignored the evidence that proved his innocence at trial.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Crucially, while an indicative amount is set by the Judiciary every year, there is no legal limit to how much can be demanded by families of the victims. IHRNGO has recorded many cases where defendants are executed because they cannot afford to pay the blood money. Should the victim’s family choose execution, they are not only encouraged to attend, but also to physically carry out the execution themselves.

According to IHRNGO’s 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 419 people including a juvenile offender and 19 women, were executed for murder charges, the highest number of qisas executions since 2010. Only 12% of the recorded qisas executions were announced by official sources. In 2024, Iran Human Rights also recorded 649 cases of families choosing diya or forgiveness instead of qisas executions. In the first eight months of 2025, at least 375 people were executed for murder charges in Iran.

Execution in Qazvin


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 9, 2025: Farzad Mohebat, a man on death row for drug-related offences, was executed in Qazvin Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Qazvin (Choobindar) Central Prison on 6 September 2025. His identity has been established as Farzad Mohebat from Qazvin. He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

At the time of writing, his executions has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Drug-related executions have continuously risen every year since 2021. According to IHRNGO’s 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 503 people were executed for drug-related charges, of which only under 3% were announced by official sources. 17% of all drug-related executions in 2024 were Baluch minorities while they represent 2-6% of Iran’s population. At least 426 people were executed for drug-related offences in the first eight months of 2025.

Executions in Kermanshah


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 9, 2025: Jalal Moradi and Rahman Ali Akbari, two Kurdish men on death row for murder and drug-related offences, were executed in Kermanshah Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Kermanshah (Dizel Abad) Central Prison on 2 September 2025. His identity has been established as Jalal Moradi, a Kurdish man from Kermanshah who was arrested seven years ago and sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

Another man was hanged at the prison on 3 September. He has been identified as Rahman Ali Akbari, a 35-year-old Kurdish man from the village of Angaz in Kermanshah. He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Execution in Manujan 


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Mohammad Mir Baluchzehi, a Baluch man on death row for drug-related offences, was executed in Manujan Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Manujan Prison, Kerman province, on 7 September 2025. His identity has been established as Mohammad Mir Baluchzehi, a 46-year-old Baluch man from Zahedan.

He was arrested in Minab county around ten years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Execution in Zahedan 


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Massoud Ghanbarzehi, a Baluch man on death row for murder, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Zahedan Central Prison on 7 September 2025. His identity has been established as Massoud Ghanbarzehi, a 38-year-old Baluch man from the Gourband region of Zahedan.

He was arrested by the police on 20 August 2025 and sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder by Branch 1 of the Zahedan Criminal Court.

 At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Execution in Karaj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Dariush Bahrami, a man on death row for drug-related offences, was executed in Karaj Penitentiary.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Karaj Penitentiary (Central Prison) on 6 September 2025. His identity has been established as Dariush Bahrami, a 40-year-old father of two from Kouhdasht.

He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges. According to informed IHRNGO sources, his execution was carried out at 11pm on Saturday night.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Group hanging in Isfahan 


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Mohammad Bikar, Taher Rasoulpour and Moslem Salehkhani were executed in a group hanging with “Woman, Life, Freedom” protester Mehran Bahramian in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, three men were executed in Isfahan (Dastgerd) Central Prison on 6 September 2025. Two of the men on death row for drug-related offences, have been identified as Taher Rasoulpour, a 28-year-old owner of a photography shop from Anzali, and Moslem Saleh Khani, a 41-year-old father of one and car trader from Isfahan. Taher was on death row for three years and Moslem, five years.

The third man has been identified as Mohammad Bikar, a 34-year-old man from Kashan. He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Executions in Arak


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Ahmad Rafiei and Abdolreza Karimi, two men on death row for drug-related offences, were executed in Arak Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were hanged in Arak Central Prison on 7 September 2025. Their identities have been established as Ahmad Rafiei and Abdolreza Karimi, two Arak natives.

They were arrested around six years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court in separate cases.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Execution in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 8, 2025: Massoud Ghanbarzehi, a Baluch man on death row for murder, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Zahedan Central Prison on 7 September 2025. His identity has been established as Massoud Ghanbarzehi, a 38-year-old Baluch man from the Gourband region of Zahedan.

He was arrested by the police on 20 August 2025 and sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder by Branch 1 of the Zahedan Criminal Court.

Execution in Sanandaj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 7, 2025: Azad Moradi, a Kurdish man on death row for murder, was executed in Sanandaj Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Sanandaj Central Prison on 7 September 2025. His identity has been established as Azad Moradi, a 40-year-old Kurdish man from a village in Baneh.

He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

 At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Protester executed in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 6, 2025: Mehran Bahramian, a “Woman, Life, Freedom” protester, was executed in a group hanging in Isfahan Central Prison. He is the second protester execution recorded in 2025 and the 12th since 2022. 

Iran Human Rights condemns the protester’s execution, carried out after show trials and based on torture-tainted confessions, in the strongest terms.

IHRNGO Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam stated: “Mehran Bahramian's death sentence was based on confessions extracted under torture and issued without a fair trial, making his execution an extrajudicial killing. The incompetent and crisis-ridden Islamic Republic authorities committed this crime to prevent protests in the run-up to the anniversary of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' uprising. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other Islamic Republic officials must be held accountable for this crime. The international community must respond more forcefully to the daily executions carried out in Iran.”

According to the Judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, Mehran Bahramian was hanged at an undisclosed location on 6 September 2025. Per informed IHRNGO sources, he was executed in a group hanging in Isfahan (Dastgerd) Central Prison along with a murder and two drug defendants.

Mehran Bahramian was arrested with Fazel Bahramian for participating in the 40th day commemoration ceremony for slain protesters Morad Bahramian and Ali Abbasi in Semirom on 29 December 2022. The two protesters had been killed by security forces at a protest that took place in Semirom on 16 November. Fazel was Morad’s brother and Mehran, a relative.

Videos published by state media show his torture-tainted confessions and the reconstruction of the alleged crime scene without presenting any evidence, including CCTV footage. Mehran and co-defendant Fazel Mehranian were accused of killing an IRGC member, and injuring others.

Along with Fazel, Mehran was sentenced to death on the charge of moharebeh (enmity against god) through the use of a Klashanikov and assault rifle” by the Isfahan Revolutionary Court. The two protester’s families were also coerced into silence about the case.

According to the official report, the Supreme Court overturned the sentence and referred the case back for retrial, “citing investigative deficiencies.” Ultimately, Mehran was resentenced to death at retrial, which was upheld by the Supreme Court. The Court also rejected an appeal thereafter. 

The fate and legal status of Mehran’s co-defendant, Fazel Bahramian, is not clear at the time of writing.

Mehran is the 12th “Woman, Life, Freedom” protester executed. Mohsen Shekari, Majidreza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Mohammad Hosseini, Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, Majid Kazemi, Milad Zohrevand, Mohammad Ghobadlu and Reza Rasayi and Mojahed Kourkour are the other protesters previously executed in relation to the 2022 nationwide protests.

Two hanged in Tabriz


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 6, 2025: Abolfazl Asgari and a man only identified as Mr Darvishpour, two men on death row for separate murders, were executed in Tabriz Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were hanged in Tabriz Central Prison on 3 September 2025. Their identities have been established as 30-year-old Abolfazl Asgari from Tabriz, and a 40-year-old man from Maragheh only identified as Mr Darvishpour. They were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for separate murders.

An informed source told IHRNGO: “Abolfazl was just 21 years old at the time of arrest. He was arrested for the murder of his maternal aunt while stealing gold. Darvishpour was arrested for a murder in the course of a street fight five years ago.

 At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Tennessee executes Darrell Hines

The state has spent millions of dollars over decades to execute a seriously ill man who was already incarcerated. The state of Tennessee executed death row inmate Darrell Hines Thursday morning, according to an advocacy group.  No formal announcement of the execution has been issued by state leaders yet. The execution was slated for 10 a.m. Thursday at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. [DPN update] Hines was pronounced dead at 10:43 a.m. CDT. His last meal was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, corn, fries, biscuits, a chicken sandwich, chocolate chip cake, and sweet tea.

The 'Black Widow' shakes Iran: 10 death sentences for a serial killer who killed 12 men

Kolthum Akbari, an Iranian woman widely dubbed the “Black Widow,” was convicted of serial murders of elderly men she married, often temporarily. Tennessee set to execute Anthony Darrell Hines

Barring any last-minute interventions, the Tennessee Department of Correction will execute Anthony Darrell Hines by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville Thursday morning. This week, two courts had the opportunity to halt the execution: the federal court in Middle Tennessee and the U.S. Supreme Court. Gov. Bill Lee announced Tuesday he personally would not prevent the execution. “After deliberate consideration of Anthony Darrell Hines’ request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene,” he said in a written statement. The U.S. Supreme Court has not granted a stay or reprieve.

Oklahoma executes Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez

Oklahoma has carried out 1 of 3 executions set for the same day in the United States in another sign of the resurgence of the death penalty in the country.  Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 10:13 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.  He was put to death by lethal injection for the murder of his common-law wife in 2003 at their Oklahoma City home. He admitted to police he shot her twice during an argument.  Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, did not fight for his life, stunning his attorneys in July when he told the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board that he didn't want clemency. "It's time for me to pay for what I did," he said.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issues three death penalty reprieves

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued execution reprieves for three death row inmates on Friday. In a statement, DeWine said he issued reprieves for Keith LaMar, Scott Group, and Davel Chinn, all of whom were set to be executed early next year. LaMar was scheduled to be executed on Jan. 13, 2027. He was convicted of aggravated murder for the deaths of five inmates during a 1993 riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville. The Iranian regime has long viewed women as central to the country’s struggle for freedom—and therefore as central targets of repression. The nationwide uprising of 2022 fundamentally altered the political landscape, demonstrating that Iranian women were no longer merely participants in protest movements but among their principal organizers and symbols.
