Iran | Executions in Hamedan, Tabria, Arak, Doroud, Ghezel Hesar

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 25, 2025: Akbar Sheikhi, a man on death row for drug-related offences, was executed in Hamedan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Hamedan Central Prison on 23 April 2025. His identity has been established as 25-year-old Akbar Sheikhi from Hamedan.

He was arrested five years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Drug-related executions have continuously risen every year since 2021. According to IHRNGO’s 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 503 people were executed for drug-related charges, of which only under 3% were announced by official sources. 17% of all drug-related executions in 2024 were Baluch minorities while they represent 2-6% of Iran’s population.

Executions in Tabriz

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 24, 2025: Mehran Zolfi and Asghan Nourinia, two men on death row for drug-related offences in separate cases, were executed in Tabriz Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were hanged in Arak Central Prison on 23 April 2025. Their identities have been established as 27-year-old Mehran Zolfi from Tabriz and 35-year-old Asghar Nourinia from Jolfa.

Mehran was arrested four years ago and Asghar, three years ago. They were both sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Execution in Arak

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 24, 2025: Reza Tabarteh Farahani, a man on death row for “rape by sodomy,” was executed in Arak Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Arak Central Prison on 22 April 2025. His identity has been established as Reza Tabarteh Farahani who was sentenced to death on charges of “rape by sodomy.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

In cases of rape, there is a high chance of defendants being tortured to make false confessions which are used to issue death sentences. Iran is one of the few countries in the world that sanctions the death penalty for rape and sexual offences.

According to the 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 22 people were executed for rape charges across 10 prisons.

Execution in Doroud

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 24, 2025: Javad Goudarzi, a man on death row for murder, was executed in Doroud Prison.

According to HRANA news agency, a man was hanged in Doroud Prison in Lorestan province on 20 April 2025. His identity has been reported as Javad Goudarzi who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Crucially, while an indicative amount is set by the Judiciary every year, there is no legal limit to how much can be demanded by families of the victims. IHRNGO has recorded many cases where defendants are executed because they cannot afford to pay the blood money.

According to IHRNGO’s 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 419 people including a juvenile offender and 19 women, were executed for murder charges, the highest number of qisas executions since 2010. Only 12% of the recorded qisas executions were announced by official sources. In 2024, Iran Human Rights also recorded 649 cases of families choosing diya or forgiveness instead of qisas executions.

Executions in Yazd

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 24, 2025: Vahid Narouyi, a Baluch minority, Yarouli Mahmoudvand and Rashid Seyedzadeh were executed for drug-related offences in Yazd Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, three men were hanged in Yazd Central Prison on 22 April 2025. Their identities have been established as Vahid Narouyi, a Baluch man from Zahedan, Yarouli Mahmoudvand from Khorramabad, and Rashid Seyedzadeh from Aligudarz.

They were all sentenced to death on drug-related charges in separate cases. Vahid and Yarouli were arrested five years ago and Rashid was arrested four years ago.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Five executions in Gesel Hesar

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 24, 2025: Five men including an Afghan national, two Kurdish and one Baluch minorities named Abdollah Pashtouyi, Mahmoudali Naseri, Akbar Mousavi, Amanollah Barahouyi and Salahedin Amoudi were executed for drug-related and security-related charges in Ghezel Hesar Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, five men were hanged in Ghezelhesar Prison in Alborz province on 23 April 2025. Four of the men who were on death row for drug-related offences have been identified as Kurdish minorities Mahmoudali Naseri and Akbar Mousavi from Harsin, Amanollah Barahouyi, a Baluch minority and Sallahodin Amoudi.

Amanollah was on death row for eight years, and Mahmoudali and Akbar were arrested in the same case nine years ago.

The fourth man has been identified as Abdollah Pashtouyi, an Afghan national sentenced to death on the charge of moharebeh (enmity against god) through armed robbery. He was on death row for five years.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Florida executes Billy Kearse

Florida Cop-killer Billy Kearse set to be executed today

A man who confessed to fatally shooting Fort Pierce Police Officer Danny Parrish with his own service weapon during a 1991 traffic stop is scheduled to be executed starting at 6 p.m. March 3, barring a last-minute stay. Billy L. Kearse, 53, will be the third person put to death by the state this year, just one week after the execution of Melvin Trotter, who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death for strangling and stabbing Virgie Langford in Palmetto in 1986. The Florida Supreme Court on Feb. 12 denied a motion for a stay of execution and a motion for an extension due to the fading health and death of the father of Kearse's attorney. Attorneys for Kearse have filed a motion with the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the execution, citing violations of the Sixth, Eighth and 14th Amendments of the United States Constitution.

Cedric Ricks is set to be killed on March 11 Cedric Ricks spoke in his own defense at his 2013 murder trial, something most defendants accused of a terrible crime do not do. Ricks confessed that he had killed his girlfriend, Roxann Sanchez, and her 8-year-old son. He admitted he was aggressive and had trouble controlling his anger, stating that he was “sorry about everything.” The Tarrant County jury was unmoved. Ricks has spent the last 13 years on death row and is scheduled to be executed on March 11.

Former Florida officer who raped, murdered 11-year-old set to be executed

An execution date has been set for a former Mascotte police officer who, in May 1987, assaulted and murdered an 11-year-old girl. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant for James Aren Duckett on Friday. He’s scheduled to be executed on March 31. It’ll be the state’s 5th execution this year, following a record 19 executions in 2025. Duckett was convicted in the murder of 11-year-old Teresa McAbee about a year after her death. According to officials, Duckett took the 11-year-old to a lake, where he sexually battered, strangled and drowned her.

On January 17, 2008, Michael Lee King abducted 21-year-old Denise Amber Lee from her North Port home by forcing her into his green Chevrolet Camaro. He drove her around while she was bound, including to his cousin's house to borrow tools like a shovel. King took her to his home, where he sexually battered her, then placed her in the backseat of his car. Later that evening, he drove to a remote area, shot her in the face, and buried her nude body in a shallow grave. Her remains were discovered two days later. Prosecutors seek death penalty in 2 Georgia cases

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in two separate Georgia criminal cases. One involves the killing of a Gwinnett County police officer and another is over the death of a 4-year-old girl in Hall County . Kevin Andrews is charged in the death of 25-year-old Gwinnett County Police Officer Pradeep Tamang, who was shot and killed while investigating a credit card fraud case. Authorities said Andrews had an outstanding warrant and shot at officers without warning. Another officer, David Reed, was seriously injured.

Florida has executed its second inmate of the year even as a Supreme Court justice questioned the state's “deeply troubling" record on lethal injections and how it "shrouds its executions in secrecy." Melvin Trotter, 65, was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday, Feb. 24, for the 1986 murder of 70-year-old Virgie Langford, a mother of 4 who was on the verge of retirement when she was stabbed to death in the corner grocery store that she owned for five decades. Oklahoma Ends Indefinite Death Row Solitary Confinement

Every year, thousands of prisoners in the U.S. are placed in solitary confinement, where they endure isolation, abuse, and mental suffering . This practice might soon become rarer for some inmates in Oklahoma, thanks to the efforts of activists in the state. Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Oklahoma announced that the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester had ended the practice of indefinite solitary confinement for "the vast majority" of death row prisoners.

Chinese courts conclude trials of 2 criminal gangs from northern Myanmar, 16 sentenced to death

Chinese courts have concluded the trials of 2 major criminal groups based in northern Myanmar involved in telecom and online fraud, the Supreme People's Court (SPC) said Thursday. At a press conference held by the SPC, it was revealed that by the end of 2025, courts across the country had concluded first-instance trials of over 27,000 cases related to telecom fraud operations in northern Myanmar, with more than 41,000 returned suspects sentenced. Notably, among the trials of the so-called "4 major families" criminal gangs -- which had drawn widespread domestic and international attention -- those of the Ming and Bai groups have completed all judicial proceedings.

Georgia | Death penalty sought against woman in brutal killing of 4-year-old

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Prosecutors in Hall County are seeking the death penalty against a woman accused of the brutal killing of a 4-year-old girl whose body was found in a parked car last fall. In a court filing Monday, the State announced its intent to pursue capital punishment for Jessica Motes, who faces a litany of charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, and first-degree cruelty to children. The case began on Oct. 26, 2025, when authorities discovered the body of 4-year-old Autumn Fox. The child’s remains were found inside the trunk of a vehicle parked at a Sam’s Club in Oakwood, approximately 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.
