Iran executed three Afghan nationals on the first day of 2025 at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, according to two human rights watchdog organizations.
Halvash reported that Iran executed two individuals from Afghanistan and one Baloch national in Bandar Abbas prison. They were executed without holding a last meeting with their families, the watchdog said.
Another human rights watchdog, Henvaw, reported the execution of an Afghan national.
He was identified only as “Ameen,” was sentenced to death three years ago on a murder charge, the rights watchdog reported.
Iran executed more than 70 Afghan citizens in 2024, a nearly 300 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the Iran Human Rights Organization.
Most of these executions were for drug-related offenses, with the majority carried out at Ghezel Hesar Central Prison.
The rise in executions has paralleled the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, with the number of Afghan nationals executed in Iran increasing over the past three years: 16 executions in 2022, 25 executions in 2023 and 72 executions as of November 2024.
Hengaw also reported that Iran carried out 901 executions in 2024, reflecting a sharp escalation in the use of the death penalty.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned Iran for its reliance on capital punishment, particularly against vulnerable groups such as foreign nationals.
The growing number of Afghan nationals executed in Iran has added strain to already tense relations between the two countries, further highlighting regional challenges.
