Biden Fails a Death Penalty Abolitionist’s Most Important Test

Image
The mystery of Joe Biden’s views about capital punishment has finally been solved. His decision to grant clemency to 37 of the 40 people on federal death row shows the depth of his opposition to the death penalty. And his decision to leave three of America’s most notorious killers to be executed by a future administration shows the limits of his abolitionist commitment. The three men excluded from Biden’s mass clemency—Dylann Roof, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and Robert Bowers—would no doubt pose a severe test of anyone’s resolve to end the death penalty. Biden failed that test.

Iran executed at least 883 people in 2024

Since the beginning of 2024, Iranian authorities have carried out at least 883 executions, with 94 percent conducted in complete secrecy. This has sparked widespread public protests both inside and outside the country.

The Iranian human rights site "HRANA" revealed that at least 883 executions took place in Iranian prisons during 2024, reflecting an 18.3 percent increase compared to the previous year.

In 2023, authorities in Iran executed 834 individuals, marking the highest toll since 2015.

According to a report by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), published on Thursday (December 26), 207 individuals were sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary during this period, and death sentences for 54 people were upheld by the Supreme Court.

The report indicated that executions increased by 33.5 percent, with 772 men and 26 women executed.

The executions also included five individuals who were under the age of 18 at the time of the crimes they were accused of, legally classified as "juvenile offenders."

Four executions were carried out publicly during this period.

According to HRANA’s annual report, 51.87 percent of those executed in Iran during 2024 were convicted on drug-related charges, while 40.54 percent were convicted of murder.

The human rights site confirmed that 94 percent of the executions were conducted in secrecy, without official or local media announcements.

In recent weeks, the increase in executions and the issuance of new death sentences against political prisoners in Iran have triggered a wave of protests within the country and abroad.

In a statement issued on November 20, Human Rights Watch warned that Iranian authorities had recently issued "a significant number of new death sentences," targeting political prisoners, ethnic minorities, and foreign nationals.

In a previous report marking World Day Against the Death Penalty, HRANA reported that at least 811 people were executed in Iran between October 10, 2023, and October 8, 2024.
