Tailandia | El español Daniel Sancho es condenado a cadena perpetua

El español Daniel Sancho fue encontrado culpable del asesinato premeditado del cirujano colombiano Edwin Arrieta y de otros delitos relacionados de los que estaba acusado. Fue condenado a cadena perpetua por un juez de Tailandia, quien además fijó una indemnización para la familia de la víctima de 106.000 euros. La Fiscalía pedía la pena de muerte, mientras el acusado defendía que fue una muerte accidental.

El español Daniel Sancho fue condenado a cadena perpetua tras ser hallado culpable en un tribunal de Tailandia del asesinato premeditado del cirujano colombiano Edwin Arrieta y de otros delitos relacionados por los que estaba acusado.

A las 10:55 hora local (03:55 GMT), del jueves 29 de agosto, el juez del Tribunal Provincial de Samui (sur de Tailandia), del que no se conoce su identidad, indicó que la condena había sido reducida de la pena de muerte a la cadena perpetua por la colaboración del acusado con la investigación, aunque la premeditación es una de las circunstancias agravantes para aplicar la pena capital en el caso de un asesinato en Tailandia. 

Así mismo, Sancho, presente en el tribunal, deberá pagar una indemnización a la familia de Arrieta —que dependía de él económicamente— de 4 millones de bat (casi 119.000 dólares o alrededor de 107.000 euros).

Los delitos por los que el juez lo declaró culpable son asesinato premeditado el 2 de agosto de 2023 en la isla de Phangan, descuartizamiento, ocultamiento del cadáver y destrucción del pasaporte de la víctima.

El fiscal del caso, Jeerawat Sawatdichai, afirmó a la salida de la corte que estaba "satisfecho" porque Sancho había sido condenado por los tres cargos que él presentó durante el juicio, celebrado el pasado 9 abril en el mismo tribunal.

Mientras los abogados y el acusado permanecían de pie, el juez explicó la posibilidad de presentar dos recursos, uno ante el Tribunal de Apelación y otro posterior al Tribunal Supremo, procesos que suelen demorarse un año.

Sancho, de 30 años, acudió a la vista acompañado de padre y de su madre, el actor español Rodolfo Sancho y la analista de inversiones Silvia Bronchalo, así como del abogado de oficio tailandés que le representa en el país asiático, Apichart Srinual.

También acudió a la sesión, entre otros, la abogada Nattha “Lak” Jongratwanin por parte de la coacusación, que representa a la familia de la víctima en Tailandia.

Los padres de Arrieta, Leovaldo José Arrieta y Ana Marcela Arteaga, no se desplazaron a Tailandia. Sus representantes legales en España, el despacho Ospina Abogados, ofrecerán el jueves a las 12:00 una conferencia de prensa en Madrid.

Sancho, que había reconocido el crimen tras su detención, afirmó que Arrieta había perdido la vida accidentalmente durante una pelea dado un supuesto intento de agresión sexual y solamente reconoció un delito de los que se le acusan: el ocultamiento del cadáver, penado con un máximo de un año de cárcel.

Los restos fueron hallados a comienzos de agosto del 2023 en la isla de Pangan, donde ambos habían quedado para pasar unos días de vacaciones.

Oklahoma board recommends clemency for inmate set to be executed next week
