Activists Call on President Biden to End the Federal Death Penalty Before Leaving Office

Biden’s election campaign in 2020 had pledged to end the federal death penalty and incentivize the remaining 27 states that still allow executions to do the same. While he made history as the first president in the United States to openly oppose the death penalty, there has been no movement to actually end federal executions during his nearly four years in office.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Sunday that his government has achieved more for women in the past decade than all previous governments since Independence. 

Speaking at the Lakhpati Didi rally in Jalgaon, north Maharashtra, Modi said that his government is also reinforcing laws to impose harsher penalties for crimes against women.

At the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan in Jalgaon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, "The new laws have provision for death penalty and life imprisonment for sexual crimes against minors. There have been many cases of cheating in the name of marriage with daughters. Earlier, there was no clear law for this. Now false promises of marriage and deception have also been clearly defined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. I assure you, the central government is with the state governments in every way to stop atrocities against women. We will have to stop only after eradicating this mentality from Indian society. Therefore, today India is moving ahead on the path of development and Maharashtra has a very big role in it. Maharashtra is a shining star of Viksit Bharat."

Modi highlighted that until 2014, loans totaling less than Rs 25,000 crore were provided to women self-help groups. 

However, in the past decade, this amount has surged to Rs 9 lakh crore. He also said the need for the BJP-led Mahayuti government to remain in power for the foreseeable future to guarantee Maharashtra's stability and continued prosperity.

This written record -- dated September 9 -- was written by a judge appointed to witness the execution. SANA'A September 07. 2024 (Saba) - With the aim of suppressing opponents of the Al Saud regime, the intensity of executions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has escalated sharply in the first half of this year, with an increase of 42 percent over the same period last year. In the latest execution of opponents of the Al Saud regime witnessed by the Kingdom, the death sentence was carried out against Abdul Majeed al-Nimr (59 years old) last Saturday. Public execution in Saudi Arabia (file photo) A Saudi newspaper has carried a film showing the beheading of a man convicted of raping a teenaged boy before murdering him in the heart of the desert. The rare and shocking 51-second film showed the executioner bringing down his sword on the defendant’s head, which was severed in just a split of second. The executioner, a tall man wearing traditional Saudi dishdasha (gown) and ghutra (head cover), then wiped blood off his sword with a piece of cloth after the beheading before walking away from the rapist’s headless body. Sharq newspaper, which published the film, did not say how it was shot as filming of executions in the conservative Gulf kingdom is banned. Newspapers said the unnamed defendant had been convicted of abducting the Saudi boy to a desolate desert area and raping him. India | Supreme Court mulls guidelines to address delays in execution of death row convicts

Expressing concern over the agonising indefinite delays in execution of death row convicts, the Supreme Court has indicated that it’s mulling issuing certain guidelines to address the issue. “Possibly, it is time for us to lay down the procedure as to what the public prosecutor has to do when mercy petitions of convicts against the death sentence are rejected. This situation cannot continue. There has to be a procedure as to how the prosecutor and court have to react,” a three-judge Bench led by Justice AS Oka said.

The state of Alabama executed Gary Brown more than two decades ago for his connection to a fatal stabbing. But at a recent Sunday service in Birmingham, you could hear him preaching. In the bustling foyer of the Unitarian Universalist Church, an archival recording of one of Brown’s sermons in prison thrummed under patrons’ lively chatter. Frank Amado On October 19, 2009 U.S. Citizen, Frank Amado, was arrested outside of his apartment in Jakarta, Indonesia by BNN (the Indonesian drug enforcement agency) for being in possession of 5.668 grams of Shabu (also known as "Ice") which he was storing at his apartment. Frank was given a death sentence on August 4, 2010. We have been fortunate enough to be able to correspond with Frank. Here is his story: 9 August, 2010 What were you arrested for?
