Since the beginning of 2024 until the end of April, the Ministry of Interior in Saudi Arabia announced the execution of 55 individuals. This figure constitutes a 189% increase compared to the executions in the first third of 2023, which witnessed 19 executions. The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights views these numbers as a clear indication of the Saudi government's continued approach towards executing and issuing death sentences, and that the promises made in recent years have become elusive.

Somalia | Man who set pregnant wife ablaze to be executed: Court

MOGADISHU (HORN OBSERVER) – In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, the Banadir Regional Court in Mogadishu handed down the death penalty to a man convicted of burning his wife to death in January.

The announcement came during a brief court session attended by representatives from both families.

"This verdict is the culmination of more than three hearings where Sayid Ali Moalim stood accused of murder and using fire to kill Luul Abdiasis on January 26,” stated judge Salah Ali Mohamud, citing Article 434 of the penal code.

The convict was arrested while on the run last month.

The courtroom erupted in chaos as the judge pronounced the sentence, reflecting the gravity of the crime and its impact on the community.

The tragic death of Luul Abdiasis ignited (sic) a national debate on the safety of women and girls in Somalia.

Since Luul’s passing, at least seven other cases of femicide have been reported in the country, underscoring the urgent need for action to protect vulnerable individuals.

Following the court’s decision, Luul’s father, Abdiasis, expressed relief, deeming it a just outcome. He vowed to lay his daughter to rest once justice was served, as her body remains in the hospital mortuary.

Luul, who was six months pregnant at the time of her murder, had her life cut short in a heinous act of violence.

However, clan elders and relatives of Sayid Ali Moalim denounced the verdict, signaling their intention to appeal to the Appeals Court.

Lawyers representing Moalim are preparing to file an appeal, contesting the death sentence handed down to the young perpetrator.
