Judicial appointments and the death penalty are among areas where a lame-duck administration can still leave a mark. Donald Trump’s second presidential term will begin on Jan. 20, bringing with it promises to dramatically reshape many aspects of the criminal justice system. The U.S. Senate — with its authority over confirming judicial nominees — will also shift from Democratic to Republican control.

Ohio | Trial date set for Clermont County father accused of killing 3 young sons

A trial date has been set for the father accused of murdering his 3 sons in Clermont County.

The 4-week trial has been set for July 8-Aug. 2, 2024.

Doerman is accused of murdering his 3 young sons at their home on Laurel Lindale Road in Monroe Township.

Doerman was indicted on 21 charges, including 9 counts of aggravated murder. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Doerman had planned the murders for months, and then on June 15, he came home early from work and had his wife and their three boys join him for a nap in the couple's bedroom.

Doerman is then accused of getting up, grabbing a rifle from a gun safe and shooting his children, 7-year-old Clayton, 4-year-old Hunter and 3-year-old Chase.

Doerman was arrested on his porch.

In the coming months, Doerman will return to court for pretrial hearings, including one where the judge will hear arguments over 34 motions filed by the defense.

Defense attorneys ask that potential jurors be questioned individually on issues related to publicity and the death penalty and that the jury pool consist of convicted felons who have served their sentences.

They also want gruesome photographs of the deceased children to be excluded from the trial and are asking the court to prohibit prosecution witnesses from giving emotional testimony.

The defense wants to make sure jurors don't reach a verdict based on sympathy.

Judge Richard Ferenc set a Nov. 20 court date to hear all of the 34 motions filed in the case.
