Singapore | Saridewi Djamani was sentenced to death after she was found guilty of trafficking 1kg of drugs

The 40-year-old Singaporean woman, Saridewi Djamani, scheduled to executed tomorrow was sentenced to death after she was found guilty of trafficking a total of 1kg of drugs containing 30.72g of pure heroin.

Djamani who was arrested in 2018, will be the second drug convict to be executed in one week after fellow Singaporean Mohd Aziz bin Hussain, was executed last week, and will be the first woman to be handed the death penalty in 20 years, according to human rights groups.

In her defence, Djamani claimed she was suffering from persistent depressive disorder and severe substance use disorder and was stocking up on heroin for her own use during the fasting month but the plea was discarded by the court.

Prosecutors told the court that on 17 June 2016, at about 3.35pm, one of Djamani’s accomplices, Muhammad Haikal Abdullah, met her at the block of her flat and passed her a plastic bag containing drugs in exchange for two envelopes containing $15,550 in total.

“Unbeknownst to the duo, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were monitoring them. Haikal, a Malaysian, was intercepted at a traffic junction on his motorcycle shortly after he left the block.

“Meanwhile, officers went to Saridewi’s flat to arrest her. Upon hearing movements outside the door, she threw plastic bags containing drugs out of her kitchen window on the 16th floor. Saridewi then let the CNB officers into her home before they could cut through the metal grille gate.”

In his ruling on Thursday, High Court Judge See Kee Oon noted that Djamani did not deny selling heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis and Erimin from her HDB flat but sought to downplay the scale of her trafficking business.

“Based on her account that she was consuming one to two straws every three days, (one of the drug exhibits) would have lasted Saridewi about 682 days… The need to stock up almost two years’ worth of supply of (heroin) was unbelievable,” said the judge.

Alabama SC approves second nitrogen gas execution

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the execution of a second inmate by nitrogen gas, months after the state became the first state to put a person to death with the previously untested method. On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. The defense argued for life in prison without parole, saying Thursday morning that Elders’ actions came after a lifetime of drug addiction and going in and out of jails and prisons, being kicked out of his family home as a teenager and not receiving support from family members.

Alabama approves second nitrogen hypoxia execution

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the nitrogen hypoxia execution of Alan Eugene Miller, setting the stage for the state to have at least four executions this year. Miller's execution would be the second carried out using nitrogen gas, the Alabama Attorney General’s office says. Miller, now 59, was convicted of killing three people during a pair of 1999 workplace shootings in suburban Birmingham. He was living in Autauga County at the time.
