Iran | Executions in Isfahan and Kashan, Shiraz, Karaj, Kahnuj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 2, 2023: Rasoul Sheikh Arpanahi, Nematollah Arzani and Aghil Arabi, three Bakhtiari men sentenced to death for drug-related charges, were executed in Isfahan and Kashan prisons.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, three men were executed in Isfahan Central Prison and Kashan Prison on 1 June. 37-year-old Nematollah Arzani and 30-year-old Rasoul Sheikh Arpanahi who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges in the same case, were executed in Kashan Prison

On the same day, 30-year-old Aghil Arabi was executed for drug-related charges in Isfahan Central Prison.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “All three prisoners were from the Bakhtiari tribe in Isfahan. Aghil Arabi was behind bars for four years. Nematollah Arzani and Rasoul Sheikh Arpanahi were arrested in the same case in Kashan three years ago.”

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to the 2022 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 256 people were executed for drug-related offences in 2022, a more than two-fold increase compared to 2021 (126) and ten times more than 2020 (25).

Executions in Shiraz


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 2, 2023: Ali Mohammad Zeraat and Esmail Nasiri were executed for drug-related charges in Shiraz Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Shiraz Central Prison on 2 June. Their identities have been established as Ali Mohammad Zeraat and Esmail Nasiri who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

Three hanged in Karaj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 1, 2023: Ezatali Sabzi and two unidentified men were executed for drug-related charges in Karaj Penitentiary.

According to HRANA news agency, three men were executed in Karaj Penitentiary on 30 May. One of the men’s identities has been reported as Ezatali Sabzi. They were all sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Ali Mohammad Zeraat and Esmail Nasiri were arrested around three years ago. Ali Mohammad had a small child.”

Executions in Kahnuj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 1, 2023: Ashkan Sohrabi and Aria Parvizi, two Baluch men sentenced to death for drug-related charges, were executed in Kahnuj Prison.

According to Hal Vash, two Baluch men were executed in Kahnuj Prison in Kerman province on 1 June. Their identities have been reported as 24-year-old Ashkan Sohrabi and 23-year-old Aria Parvizi who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Ethnic minorities, the Baluch in particular, are grossly overrepresented in execution numbers in Iran. In 2022, at least 174 Baluch minorities including 3 women, were executed in 22 prisons across Iran, making up 30% of overall executions. This is while they represent just 2-6% of Iran’s population.

Baluch minorities also represented almost half of drug-related executions in 2022. 47.3% of the 256 people executed for drug-related charges were Baluch.
