In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Ten Convicts Executed in Iran in One Single Day

According to rights groups, Iranian authorities executed at least 582 people in 2022, 75 percent more people than the previous year.

Iranian authorities executed at least 10 people across the country on May 3, while seven others face imminent execution after being transferred to solitary confinement, according to human rights groups and media reports.

The executions drew criticism from human rights activists, who called on the government to stop using the death penalty and focus instead on reforming the judicial system.

The Rokna news website reported that five prisoners were executed in Rajaeeshahr prison in Karaj, near Tehran. All had been convicted of murder.

In Qazvin’s prison, in north-western Iran, two prisoners, Shahin Firouzkohi and Ali Daftari, were executed after being convicted on drug-related charges.

Hanif Khosravi, who was convicted of murder, was executed in Nishabour’s prison, north-eastern Iran.

In the south of the country, two ethnic Baluch prisoners, Al-Mohammed Shirzaei Barahui and Hassan Zarei, were executed in Minab prison for drug offenses.

Meanwhile, three prisoners in Karaj's Qezel Hesar prison and four prisoners in Varamin’s Khorin prison have been transferred to solitary confinement. Human rights activists said they were sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and France’s Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM), Iranian authorities executed at least 582 people in 2022, 75 percent more people than the previous year.

Last year’s number of executions was the highest since 2015 and well above the figure of 333 recorded in 2021, they said.
