Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Marcos asks Widodo to 'reexamine' Mary Jane Veloso's case

Marcos is  pursuing all legal remedies including asking for her pardon, commutation of sentence, or even extradition to serve her sentence in the Philippines

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday said he has asked Indonesian President Joko Widodo to reexamine the case of jailed overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso, who has been on Indonesia's death row over drug-related charges.

In a chance interview with reporters, Marcos said he mentioned Veloso’s case in his talk with Widodo on the sidelines of the 42nd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.

“Sabi ko (I said) the best that we can do I suppose is for the Indonesian authorities to reexamine the case para naman as a favor to the Philippines. ‘Yun lang ang napag-usapan namin (That's the only thing that we talked about). Not much more than that,” Marcos said.

During his brief talk with Widodo, Marcos also said while he respects the prevailing laws in Indonesia as far as illegal drug charges are concerned, the Philippine government is working hard on Veloso’s case.

Marcos earlier said the Philippine government has not given up on Veloso, adding that it is pursuing all legal remedies including asking for her pardon, commutation of sentence, or even extradition to serve her sentence in the Philippines.

“But the Indonesian answered us that this is the law. Ito ‘yung batas dito sa Indonesia kaya’t kailangan natin ipagpatupad ‘yan. And they have already given us postponement … but that doesn’t mean it’s done,” Marcos said in one of his interviews.

Veloso has been jailed in Indonesia since 2010 when about 2.6 kilograms of heroin were found in her suitcase.

Six months after her arrest, Veloso was meted out the death penalty.

Her execution in April 2015 was postponed following the arrest of her recruiters in the Philippines.

In September last year, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) had asked Indonesia to pardon Veloso.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. The defense argued for life in prison without parole, saying Thursday morning that Elders’ actions came after a lifetime of drug addiction and going in and out of jails and prisons, being kicked out of his family home as a teenager and not receiving support from family members.

Four More Prisoners Executed in Iran

Authorities of the Islamic Republic executed four more prisoners over the weekend as death penalties continue to rise in the country. The Iran Human Rights Organization reported that three inmates were executed on April 27 in Tabriz Prison for drug-related offenses. The inmates were identified as Amir Moharrami, 36, Davoud Namyari, 33, and Sohrab Hokmabad.
