In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran | 6 executions in Arak and Gorgan prisons

According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on January 11, 2023, 6 prisoners were executed in Arak and Gorgan prisons.

According to Hengaw website, on December 11, 2023, 5 prisoners were executed in Arak prison on drug charges. 2 of these prisoners, Azad Dadvand, 40 years old, from Sardasht, and Kivan Amini tavakkol, 42 years old, from Baneh, were executed in Arak prison on drug charges.

Before this, the Iranian Human Rights Society had announced the execution of a prisoner named Mehdi Karmi.

Mehdi, son of Mozafar, was born in 1987 and was married. He was executed on January 10, 2023, in Arak prison.

Also, another prisoner named Shahram Mortazavi was executed in Gorgan prison on charges of murder.

Shahram Mortazavi from Golestan province was accused of committing murder in a quarrel and was sentenced to death for this charge.

Including these 6 executions 43 prisoners executed

Including these executions, at least 43 prisoners were executed in Iran’s prisons within 21 days since mid-December.

It should be noted that at least 623 executions were carried out in Iran’s prisons in 2022. It means, 273 more prisoners were executed in Iran than last year.

Iran has a population of more than 85 million people, which more than 30% are young people. The people of Iran are struggling with an autocratic and dictatorial government.

This government system is based on corruption and deception. For this reason, this government not only does not respond to the needs of the young generation, who are considered the capital of this country, but also tries to maintain its shaky foundations by suppression.

Maintaining the foundations of the corrupt and bloody government of Velayat al-Faqih is based on arrest and imprisonment and execution.
