In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran | Man Executed for Drug Charges in Zanjan, 5 Executed for Drug Charges in Arak, 2 Executed for Murder in Rasht, Man Executed for Drug Charges in Karaj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 16, 2022: Abolfazl Heidarzadeh, a man sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was executed in Zanjan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Zanjan Central Prison on December 15. His identity has been established as 30-year-old Abolfazl Heidarzadeh, a driver from Kazeroun.

Informed sources told Iran Human Rights that Abolfazl was arrested three years ago and sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

More than 500 people including 2 juvenile offenders have been executed in 2022, the highest annual execution since 2017.

Five Men Executed for Drug Charges in Arak


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 16, 2022: Five men sentenced to death for drug-related charges, have been executed in Arak Central Prison.

According to HRANA news agency, at least five men were executed on the morning of December 12. The identities of three of the men have been reported as Mohammad Imani, Ehsan Naseri and Mostafa Kashi. The other two men have not been identified.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Two Men Executed for Murder in Rasht


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 15, 2022: Hossein Amini and Amir Abbasi, sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were executed in Rasht Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Rasht Central Prison on November 15. Their identities have been established as Hossein Amini and Amir Abbasi who were sentenced to death for murder.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Man Executed for Drug Charges in Karaj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 15, 2022: Reza Tajik, a man sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was executed in Karaj Penitentiary.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Karaj Penitentiary on December 14. His identity has been established as Reza Tajik who was sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

An informed source previously told Iran Human Rights: “Reza Tajik’s father is an Afghan national and his mother, Iranian. His execution is due to take place tomorrow.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials.
