As clock ticks toward another Trump presidency, federal death row prisoners appeal for clemency

President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Baluch Morteza Barahouyi Executed for Murder in Zahedan

Morteza Barahouyi, a Baluch man sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on September 28. His identity has been established as Morteza Barahouyi who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Reza Gharehlu Executed for Murder in Neishabur


Reza Gharehlu, a man sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Neishabur Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Neishabur Prison on October 15. His identity has been established as Reza Gharehlu who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

Speaking to Iran Human Rights, an informed source said: “Reza Gharehlu had been in prison for the murder of his friend for around three years.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Sadegh Afkandeh and Ali Mohammad Saeedi Executed in Zanjan


Sadegh Afkandeh and Ali Mohammad Saeedi were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, 2 men were executed in Zanjan Central Prison on October 13. Their identities have been established as 43-year-old Sadegh Afkandeh who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences and Ali Mohammad Saeedi who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

Informed sources told Iran Human Rights that Sadegh Afkandeh was arrested for drug charges around 4 years ago and had been held in Zanjan Central Prison since.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

At least 251 including 6 women and 67 Baluch minorities were executed in the first 6 months of 2022. This is double the number of executions in the same period in 2021 when 117 people were executed. On September 10, Iran Human Rights recorded over 400 executions for the 1st time in 5 years.

Hamed Dehghan and Amir Jahangiri Executed in Qom


Hamed Dehghan and Amir Jahangiri who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges, have been executed in Qom Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Qom Central Prison on October 15. Their identities have been established as 42-year-old Amir Jahangiri and Hamed Dehghan who were both sentenced to death for drug-related offences by the Revolutionary Court.

Both men were transferred for execution from Ward 1 of the prison, according to informed sources. Hamed Dehghan had been behind bars for drug offences for 4 years and Amir Jahangiri for 3 years.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran
