President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Iran | Two Executed in Ilam, Four Baluch Men Executed in Zabol

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 10, 2022: Khosro Tarek and Kamal Bayanirad were executed for murder charges in Ilam Central Prison. The execution of another prisoner was reported at the same prison on the same day.

According to Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Ilam Central Prison on the morning of 8 June. Their identities have been established as 45-year-old Khosro Tarek, an Ilam resident, and Kamal Bayanirad. They were both sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

Iran Human Rights previously reported the execution of Sattar Arghandeh at the same prison on the same day which brings that day’s count to three.

According to Hengaw which first reported news of his execution, Khosro had been behind bars for around seven years and Kamal for around five years.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law.

Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Four Baluch Men Executed in Zabol

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 12, 2022: Four Baluch men have been executed on murder and drug-related charges in Zabol Prison.

According to Hal Vash, four Baluch men were executed in Zabol Prison on the morning of 11 June. Their identities have been reported as Zahak-resident, Esmail (Sakhi) Zarouzehi who was sentenced to death for drug-related charges, 27-year-old Aminollah Barahouyi (Narouyi), known as Mehrollah and 34-year-old Sanollah Bahadorzehi (Narouyi), both Zahak natives who were also sentenced to death for drug-related charges in the same case.

The identity of the fourth man who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, has been reported as Rasam Poudineh.

On 10 June, Iran Human Rights had called for their execution to be halted after they were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to reports compiled by Iran Human Rights, at least 126 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2021, a fivefold increase compared to drug executions in the previous three years. None of the 2021 drug-related executions were reported by official sources.

Data gathered by Iran Human Rights also shows that Baluch prisoners accounted for 21% of all executions in 2021, while only representing 2–6% of Iran’s population.

Iran Human Rights’s latest report also found that 25% of the 168 recorded executions in the first five months of 2022 were Baluch minorities.
