Bar asks Singapore to spare Malaysian, Singaporean with low IQ from noose

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar has urged the Singapore government to consider granting clemency to a Sabahan with a low IQ and spare him from the hangman’s noose.

Pausi Jefridin and a Singaporean, Roslan Bakar, who also has a low IQ, were sentenced to death in Singapore for drug trafficking in 2010.

They are scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday.

Bar president AG Kalidas said they hoped the Singapore government would consider the cognitive impairments of Pausi and Roslan.

“The circumstances call for humanity and compassion,” he said.

Yesterday, Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network executive coordinator Dobby Chew said they had received documents on Pausi’s execution date.

He added that Pausi’s family were informed last Friday about the execution.

Kalidas noted that Malaysia and Singapore were signatories of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which states that a mentally impaired person cannot be hanged.

“We take cognisance of Singapore’s strict policy with regard to drug trafficking.

“However, we sincerely hope that Singapore will uphold its commitment made under the CRPD,” he said.

Besides Pausi, another Malaysian, Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, is also on death row.

Nagaenthran filed two applications last month in an attempt to halt his death sentence.

Singapore’s Court of Appeal is scheduled to deliver its decision at the end of the month.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has scheduled the execution of Air Force veteran and longtime death row prisoner Jim Pavatt for Nov. 12, as his attorneys continue to challenge his conviction and contend that prosecutors relied on false arguments, disputed forensic evidence and an alleged confession they later described as bogus. Pavatt, who served nearly 22 years in the Air Force and rose to the rank of master sergeant, was convicted and sentenced to death for the 2001 killing of Rob Andrew in Oklahoma City. His execution is scheduled for the day after Veterans Day.
