Tobago man sentenced to death for murdering teenagers

A Tobago man has been sentenced to hang for the 2009 double murder of 2 teenage boys whose bodies were found close to each other at French Fort, Scarborough.

Alvaro Ayers, also known as Josey Wales, was convicted by Justice Althea Alexis-Windsor at the end of a judge-only virtual trial.

He was sentenced to hang for the murders of Kolen Salandy 16, and Rondell Thomas, 15, on September 19, 2009.

Before the death sentence was read to him, Ayers insisted, “I am not guilty.”

Ayers was charged with another man, Gary Mohammed.

In October 2009, Mohammed was killed in a shootout with the police in the Moruga forest. He and another man were hiding in a camp when police approached them.

Mohammed had a Tobago address but was originally from Ste Madeleine.

Ayers, who had three addresses in Tobago — at Bethel, Mason Hall, and Bagatelle No 1 in Scarborough – surrendered to the police.

He was represented by attorneys Amerelle Francis and Josiah Soo Hon.

Sixteen-year-old Salandy, of Patience Hill, was a past student of Bishop’s High School, Tobago, who was enrolled to do A-Levels at the UWI School of Continuing Studies (UWI Sixth Form) at Signal Hill. Thomas was a form three student of Signal Hill Secondary Comprehensive School.

An autopsy report said the teenagers died from blunt force cervical trauma and broken necks.

Giselle Ferguson-Heller prosecuted.

Days after the boys’ murder, then chief secretary of the THA, Orville London, condemned the slayings, describing the act a barbaric. He called for swift justice.

"Any violent crime has to be condemned, but when you have crimes against the very young, that is barbarous, and it should be condemned in the strongest manner."

He said the boys’ murder could not be tolerated, adding that the killings had shocked Tobago and affected the island.

The Osaka District Court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit by death row inmates that claimed same-day notifications of executions violate the Constitution — the first ruling of its kind. The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit against the government in hopes of sparking a wider discussion on the rights of death row prisoners. They also sought ¥22 million in compensation and plan to appeal to a higher court.

A district judge who previously presided over a woman’s capital murder case recommended last week that the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturn Melissa Lucio's 2008 conviction after a district attorney’s office admitted that prosecutors withheld evidence from her defense.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear Arizona death penalty case that could redefine historic precedent

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments centering on an Arizona death row prisoner that could set new precedent to determining ineffective assistance of counsel.  A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Danny Lee Jones for the 1992 murders of Robert Weaver and his daughter Tisha, as well as the attempted murder of Weaver’s grandmother. A judge sentenced Jones to death for the two murders.

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 15 2024: Marjan Hajizadeh and Esmail Hassaniani, a couple sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.  Marjan is reported to have been 16 at the time of arrest, which IHRNGO is working to confirm. If verified, she will be the first child offender executed for drug charges since 2014. She was also a child bride forced into marriage.

There’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430. When Louisiana legislators approved the use of nitrogen gas asphyxiation as an execution method during a second special legislative session in February, the move attracted national attention; not the least because it has only been used in the U.S. once. That’s when Alabama executed convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith on January 25th of this year. Now there’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430.
