The letter below was received by Lisa Brown, mother of Christopher Vialva, who was executed by the federal government in September 2020. Lisa was present and witnessed the execution. Sure, this is probably a part of the protocol, but its lack of recognition that she was there, and the very idea that they care one bit if anyone has questions or concerns, is just one more inconsiderate and insensitive jab at the families of the condemned...

Public execution in Saudi Arabia (file photo) A Saudi newspaper has carried a film showing the beheading of a man convicted of raping a teenaged boy before murdering him in the heart of the desert. The rare and shocking 51-second film showed the executioner bringing down his sword on the defendant’s head, which was severed in just a split of second. The executioner, a tall man wearing traditional Saudi dishdasha (gown) and ghutra (head cover), then wiped blood off his sword with a piece of cloth after the beheading before walking away from the rapist’s headless body. Sharq newspaper, which published the film, did not say how it was shot as filming of executions in the conservative Gulf kingdom is banned. Newspapers said the unnamed defendant had been convicted of abducting the Saudi boy to a desolate desert area and raping him. USA | South Carolina makes death by firing squad an option for death row inmates

South Carolina senators Tuesday added a firing squad to the list of execution alternatives if the state can't put condemned inmates to death by lethal injection. The state senate approved the bill on a key 32-11 vote with several Democrats joining Republicans in the proposal that would allow South Carolina to restart executions after nearly 10 years. The state can't put anyone to death right now because its supply of lethal injection drugs expired and it has not been able to buy any more. Currently, inmates on death row can choose between the electric chair and lethal injection, and since the drugs are not available, they pick the method that can't be used. Egypt executes 11 prisoners amid criticism

Executed prisoners were convicted in cases of murder, theft, shooting Egyptian authorities carried out executions against 11 prisoners in a jail in the country's north amid huge international human rights criticism against the move. The Egyptian daily Al-Watan said on Tuesday that "the Egyptian Prisoners Authority Monday executed 11 prisoners convicted in criminal cases.” "The corpses were transferred to Alexandria’s Kom El Deka morgue, then they will be handed over to their families for burial,” it reported. Quoting an unnamed security source, the daily said the executions took place following all levels of litigation, making the provisions "final and enforceable." It also quoted the source as saying that “the executed were convicted in cases of murder, theft, and shooting.” In recent years, Egypt has ignored international human rights criticism over the death penalty in the country. USA | Arizona finds death penalty drug after hiatus in executions

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona has finally obtained a lethal injection drug and is ready to resume executions after the difficulty of finding such drugs led to a nearly seven-year hiatus in carrying out the death penalty in the state, corrections officials said Friday. The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry confirmed that the state has obtained pentobarbital, but it declined to say how much of the drug it has gotten or reveal its source.  The agency cited a state law that keeps the identities of executioners and others who assist in carrying out the death penalty confidential. Finding a pharmacist to prepare lethal injections was one of the barriers the state faced since it put executions on hold after a botched execution in 2014. Tennessee | Prosecutors will seek death penalty if couple convicted in horrific child abuse case

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a Roane County couple accused in a horrific child abuse case after the death of at least one of their adopted children. In separate notices issued to Shirley and Michael Gray Sr., the state said it will "seek a penalty of death" if either is found guilty of the first-degree murder of their adopted daughter, Sophie Heather Gray.  Roane County authorities recovered her body in the backyard of the couple's Ten Mile neighborhood home on May 23. Deputies said she was about 11 years old at the time of her death. In the documents, prosecutors called the girl's murder "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel in that it involved serious torture or serious physical abuse beyond that necessary to cause death."  According to warrants previously obtained by Knox News, deputies said Grays locked the girl in the home's basement in 2017 as "punishment" for eating food from the kitchen. The human rights lawyer said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must provide a breakdown on S'poreans being held in prison in foreign countries The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) must provide on its website a breakdown of Singaporeans being held in prison in foreign countries, said human rights lawyer M Ravi. In an interview with The Independent Singapore published on 24 Feb, Mr Ravi opined that there should be “transparency of information”, given the precarity of capital punishment. Death penalty advocates and death penalty lawyers like himself, as well as NGOs, were not made aware of information on two Singaporeans facing capital punishment in China and Vietnam respectively, according to Mr Ravi. “At least, we are taking steps to safeguard against any unlawful execution or indiscriminate execution as such,” he added. In the ongoing discussion on the death penalty, which President Duterte wants to return so as to strengthen the rule of law, it is useful to note that the world - and the Philippines with it - has long debated this issue in the United Nations. In 1966, the UN General Assembly, of which the Philippines is a founding member, adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which, together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, make up what is known as the International Bill of Human Rights. The Philippines signed the ICCPR on December 19, 1966, and ratified it on October 23, 1986. In 1989, the General Assembly adopted the Second Protocol on Civil and Political Rights, calling on all states to abolish the death penalty. Arizona ready to execute death row inmates, corrections director says

Arizona is now ready to resume executions after being on pause since 2014, according to an email sent by the state corrections director to the attorney general. For more than a year, state Attorney General Mark Brnovich, speaking on behalf of victims' families, has encouraged Gov. Doug Ducey to resume executions. Lawsuits and lack of access to lethal drugs have prevented the state from carrying out death sentences. More than 100 people are on Arizona's death row, and at least 22 of them have exhausted all of their appeals. David Shinn, director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, alerted Brnovich that the agency has been working to obtain the necessary the drugs and to find someone who could administer them.
