President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Iran | Male Inmate and Possible Female Juvenile Offender Executed in Ardabil

Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 8, 2021: A male and a female prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, have been executed in Ardabil Central Prison. There is reason to believe that the female prisoner may have been a juvenile offender.

According to Iran Human Rights, a female and a male prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were executed at Ardabil Central Prison in the early hours of this morning, Monday, 8 February 2021.

The male prisoner’s identity has been established as 25-year-old Saeed Naderi, who was transferred for execution from Ward 3, a youth ward at the prison.

The 23-year-old female prisoner was the wife of Saeed’s uncle but her identity has yet to be established.

There is reason to believe that she may have been a juvenile offender.

Iran Human Rights is continuing to investigate the matter.

Informed sources told IHR: “Saeed Naderi and his uncle’s wife killed his uncle five years ago and set his corpse on fire.”

Currently, there are 50 prisoners on death row in Ardabil Central Prison.

Of the 50, ten have been sentenced to death on drug-related charges and the other 40 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
