Al rato una ambulancia traslada a Floyd al centro de salud del Condado Hennepin, donde murió al cabo de unos minutos. “Este abusivo, excesivo e inhumano uso de la fuerza le costó la vida a un hombre que había sido detenido por la policía por un delito no violento”, dijo Ben Crump, el abogado especialista en derechos civiles que representará a la familia del fallecido.

“Cuando uno escucha que alguien clama por socorro, se supone que hay que socorrer”, sostuvo el alcalde Frey. “Este agente falló en el sentido humano más básico. Lo que ocurrió anoche fue, simplemente, horrible”, agregó.

Los dos oficiales involucrados han sido “relevados de su poder”, pero seguirán recibiendo su paga. La jefa de policía de Minneapolis, Medaria Arradondo, informó este martes que el FBI liderará la investigación debido a la posible violación de los derechos civiles.

Este caso recuerda la trágica muerte de Eric Garner, quien murió asfixiado en 2014 por el abrazo mortal de un policía en Nueva York tras gritar hasta 11 veces: “No puedo respirar”.
