Abolition of the Death Penalty: A Tough Road ahead for India

The movement against the death penalty in present-day India faces a tremendous challenge in terms of extensive public clamour for swift executions, removal of appeals, and even support for summary executions.
With the imminent execution of the four convicts in the Delhi gang rape and murder case against the background of reactions to incidents in Hyderabad, Kathua and Unnao, harsher punishments are receiving tremendous public support, and politicians are only happy to oblige. The Supreme Court has issued administrative orders (1) to hear death sentence cases faster amidst misplaced concerns in the public that death row prisoners have too many loopholes in the law to exploit.
Framing the death penalty as a political–legal issue in India is not easy. Located within the wider spectrum of social and state violence in India, the exceptional nature of the cruelty of the death penalty is difficult to establish.
The suffering inflicted by the death penalty is the constant and daily uncerta…

Trump’s Bible study minister thinks coronavirus is God being angry about homosexuality

Ralph Drollinger, a minister who leads the weekly Bible study group for Donald Trump’s cabinet, says coronavirus is God’s judgment on us.

In particular he blames LGBT+ people, environmentalists and people with ‘depraved minds’.

However, the good news is that God doesn’t think America is as bad as Sodom and Gomorrah – yet.

In the Old Testament of the Bible, God destroyed those towns with fire and brimstone. Their crimes apparently were either gay male sex – sodomy – or not being good hosts, depending on who you listen to.

Writing in blog posts and a ‘Bible study guide’ online, Drollinger sets out his case.

He says coronavirus is an example of God’s ‘sowing and reaping wrath’.

Apparently divine anger splits into a top five. In at number one is ‘eternal wrath’, better known as Hell.

Meanwhile ‘cataclysmic wrath’ is at number three. It can be seen in the Bible stories of Sodom and Gomorrah or the Great Flood, which inspired Noah’s Ark.

By comparison, ‘sowing and reaping wrath’ is a mere level five anger.

But who is to blame?

Well, unsurprisingly, it’s lesbian, gay and bi people. Indeed, ‘a proclivity toward lesbianism and homosexuality’ is a classic sign of God’s level four ‘forsaking wrath’, according to Drollinger.

And he quotes the homophobic Bible passage:

‘For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.’

‘Too many of the unfaithful have gained high positions of influence’

Drollinger wrote: ‘Relative to the coronavirus pandemic crisis, this is not God’s abandonment wrath nor his cataclysmic wrath, rather it is sowing and reaping wrath.’

But he says America is still a long way from Sodom and Gomorrah. That’s because most Americans are ‘faithful’ to God.

He adds: ‘Conversely, there is only a small minority of individuals who are grossly disobedient to God.’

But there’s another problem, Drollinger thinks:

‘Unfortunately for the vast majority of faithful individuals in America, too many of the unfaithful have been allowed by the faithful to gain high positions of influence in our culture: high positions in our government, our educational system, our media and our entertainment industry.

‘This is tragic, unfortunate, and costly.’

Drollinger’s Capitol Ministries non-profit organization runs the Bible study group.

It meets every Wednesday morning with members of Trump’s cabinet.

Attendees include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Health Secretary Alex Azar.

Carson and Azar are members of the Coronavirus Task Force guiding the US government’s response to COVID-19.

The Intercept reports that Vice President Mike Pence, also a coronavirus task force leader is a listed host of Capitol Ministries.

Moreover, it says Drollinger’s study guides have provided Biblical justification for Trump’s most controversial decisions. These include its policy of separating undocumented child immigrants from their parents.
