Gabriel Fernandez: What happened to Gabriel Fernandez’s parents?

Gabriel Fernandez
THE TRIALS OF GABRIEL FERNANDEZ is streaming on Netflix now and for those who have not made it through the full series or haven't yet watched are curious to know what happened to Gabriel Fernandez's parents following his death. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about his parents Pearl Fernandez and Arnold Contreras.

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez on Netflix explores the shocking and heartbreaking true story of eight-year-old Gabriel, who was the victim of child abuse.

The six-part series is not an easy viewing, which follows what happened to Gabriel, the subsequent criminal trial and explores the failings of the Los Angeles Child Protection Services.

Pearl Hernandez and her partner Isauro Aguirre were found guilty of murdering Gabriel Fernandez, who died on May 24, 2013.

Arnold Contreras

Arnold Contreras is Gabriel Fernandez’s biologically father.

He is also the father of Gabriel’s older siblings, Ezequiel and Virginia.

During the time his son was being abused by Pearl and Isauro, Arnold was behind bars for robbery and possession.

Arnold learnt from the prison chaplain that his son had been taken off life support in May 2013.

In The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, prosecutor Jon Hatami spoke highly of Gabriel’s father.

He also expressed on his behalf how heartbroken he was over Gabriel’s death and how he lived with incredible guilt.

Jon said: “I can tell you that he loved Gabriel and he still loves him.

“I can tell you that he is heartbroken. I can tell you that he feels it’s his fault and if he was out of custody, he would have saved Gabriel.”

After Pearl and Isauro were sentenced, John and Arnold broke down in tears in the courtroom in what was an emotional viewing.

Arnold returned to prison after being convicted on two separate charges in 2018 and 2019.

Oxygen.com reported that Contreras was convicted in May 2018 on a first charge of acquiring and retaining personal identification information. He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

In January 2019, he was convicted on a second charge and given a one-year and four-month sentence.

He was eligible for parole in June 2019 and it is currently unknown if he has been released.

When Gabriel was born, he was put in the care of his great uncle, Michael Lemos Carranza, the uncle of Gabriel mother’s Pearl.

Michael alongside his partner David Martinez raised Gabriel four years.

In 2009, when he was four-years-old, Gabriel moved to live with his grandparents after his grandfather, Robert Fernandez did not agree with a same-sex couple raising a child.

Then in 2012 at age eight, he was placed in the care of his mother Pearl and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre.

During the eight months of living with Pearl and Isauro, Gabriel suffered extreme abuse.

When emergency services were called to his home in May 2013, he was found with a fractured skull, broken ribs and BB gun bullets in his skin, to name a few of his horrific injuries. He sadly died on May 24, 2013.

Pearl Hernandez

Isauro Aguirre and Pearl Sinthia Fernandez
Pearl Hernandez was the mother of Gabriel Fernandez.

At the time of Gabriel’s death, she had been dating Isauro for approximately two years.

Both Pearl and Isauro were found guilty of first-degree murder with an additional special circumstance of intentional murder by torture.

They were both sentenced in early 2018. As seen in the documentary, presiding Superior Court Judge George G Lomeli at their sentencing hearing told the pair: “I hope you think about the pain you caused this child and that it tortures you.”

Pearl is currently serving her life sentence at Chowchilla State Women’ Prison and Isauro is on death row at the San Quentin Jail, both situated in California.

She was able to avoid the death penalty after taking a plea deal, which saw her plead guilty to first-degree murder and receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Pearl’s defence attorney had argued that due to her low IQ, the death penalty would be “inappropriate.”

Deborah S Miora, a clinical and forensic neuropsychologist who evaluated Fernandez for the defence, concluded that she has an intellectual disability that makes her “virtually unable to use thought to guide her behaviour and temper her emotional reactions.”

Miora’s report also drew upon Pearl’s troubled childhood and her experience of abuse and neglect from a young age.

As seen in the documentary, at the sentencing hearing, Pearl told the court “I want to say I’m sorry to my family for what I did…. I wish Gabriel was alive.

“Every day I wish that I’d made better choices. I’m sorry to my children, and I want them to know that I love them.”

Isauro is one of 737 inmates on death row at San Quentin prison, the largest death row population in the western world.

However, since 1976, only 13 executions have been carried out, with the last taking place in 2006 so Isauro’s execution is unlikely to take place anytime soon.

Florida | Former prison warden who oversaw executions urges corrections workers to not participate in them

Recently Florida carried out the execution of Dusty Spencer , a 74-year-old Marine veteran, for the murder of his wife, Karen, in 1992. It was the ninth Florida execution this year. For their own sake, I urge Florida’s corrections workers to refuse to carry out another one. Before you dismiss me as some soft lefty, you should know that I am an Air Force veteran. I voted for Ron DeSantis for governor twice—and for Donald Trump for president three times.

Iraq: Saddam Hussein Execution was Moved Forward Because of Gaddafi Rescue Plans, Judge Says

Saddam Hussein's execution on December 30, 2006 The execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was accelerated due to the belief that the then Libyan leader, Muammar El-Gaddafi, had a plan to rescue him from prison, Judge Mounir Haddad revealed today. Hadad, who presided over the trial of Hussein, revealed to the Al-Arabiya Satellite Channel Point of Order program new details of the trial against the former president and his last moments before being hanged, including the 'health and welfare' votes for the magistrate himself . According to his testimony, the application of the death penalty to Saddam Hussein was precipitated because authorities knew that El-Gaddafi - later murdered in 2011 - was allegedly trying to bribe US guards who guarded him to rescue him from prison. He added that, contrary to previous reports from the local and US press, former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani gave his 'implicit approval' for Hussein's execution, an...

Tibetan protesters executed for Lhasa riot killings

Tibetan exiles have reported the first executions of those convicted for rioting last year in Lhasa, with at least two people put to death in a rare implementation of capital punishment in the restive region. Two Tibetans convicted of arson and sentenced to death in April were executed on Tuesday morning in Lhasa, reported The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, which is based in the Indian town of Dharamsala—the home in exile of the Dalai Lama. It said that Lobsang Gyaltsen and Loyak had been sentenced to death for their part in setting fire to five shops in the Tibetan capital, killing seven people, in the riot that rocked Lhasa in March last year. Officials say that 21 people — including three Tibetan protesters — died in the violence, which embarrassed Beijing just as it was preparing to stage the Olympic Games and prompted a security crackdown across the Himalayan region. The body of Mr. Gyaltsen had been returned to his family and then submitted to a river burial—an un...

Iran: Prisoner of conscience Mohsen Amir Aslani hanged for ‘different interpretation of Quran’

Mohsen Amir Aslani NCRI - The Iranian Resistance calls on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council, as well as all international human rights organizations to strongly condemn the execution of prisoner of conscience Mr Mohsen Amir Aslani on charges of “corruption on earth; changing Islam’s principles and secondary laws; and new interpretation of Quran”.  It further calls for adoption of binding decisions against the growing number of arbitrary executions by the religious fascism ruling Iran. Mr. Amir Aslani, 37, who had been in prison since eight years ago, was once sentenced to four years in prison which was later commuted to twenty-eight months. However, as more fabricated charges were brought against him, the head henchman Judge Salavati condemned him to death. The Iranian regime has refraining from handing over the body of this prisoner to his family through stonewalling and offering contradictory answers to them. The execution...

Louisiana Supreme Court Frees Death Row Prisoner, Calling Evidence Against Him “Scientifically Indefensible”

The decision affirms a lower court’s ruling nullifying Jimmie “Chris” Duncan’s 1998 first-degree murder conviction. Former Louisiana death row inmate Jimmie “Chris” Duncan is officially a free man following a unanimous ruling Monday by the Louisiana Supreme Court. In the opinion, justices upheld a lower court’s decision to toss out Duncan’s 1998 conviction for killing his former girlfriend’s toddler, Haley Oliveaux, citing flawed forensics practices used to convict him.

Tennessee Reduced Training in IV Placement in New Lethal Injection Protocol

The protocol that took effect in 2025 sheds new light on Tony Carruthers’ botched execution, when Dr. Mark Fowler spent nearly an hour trying, and failing, to place a secondary IV line Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol adopted a year and a half ago appears to include reduced training in IV placement. That’s the part of the process prison staff failed to complete last month before aborting the execution of Tony Carruthers. Filings from ongoing litigation over the protocol show concerns about the executioners’ training and qualifications aren’t new.
