Pakistan | National Assembly passes resolution to publicly hang child rapists

The National Assembly (NA) passed a resolution calling for the public hanging for rapists of children or minors.

The resolution had a majority vote although Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP) opposed it.

The resolution stated that child abuse convicts or child rapists be given the death penalty and hanged publicly.

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan presented the resolution in the lower house of the Parliament saying that Prime Minister Imran Khan wants child rapists to be hanged as their punishment.

He said that the government wants a new law aimed at hanging these child abuse convicts asking the opposition if they support the bill or not.

The parliamentary minister said:

When we raised the issue of a public hanging in the National Assembly’s standing committee on Human Rights headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, it was opposed.

This move was opposed by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf who is a former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian saying that Pakistan had signed a United Nations (UN) Charter against public hangings and that Pakistan will be going against those rights set forth by the UN.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also came to twitter to condemn this resolution saying that this was an act of barbarism and not a civilized society.

The National Assembly (NA) was also briefed earlier about the incidents involving cases of sexual harassment of children in the federal capital of Islamabad and said that there was a slight decrease in the number of cases from 66 in 2018 to just 60 in 2019.

However, the justice system is still lacking in this department as only one accused of this crime was convicted in 2019 where as all other cases are still ongoing.

This is what Minister Shireen Mazari tried to tell everyone in her tweet saying: Issue is of implementation and speedy justice which is our focus now.
