Biden failed that test.

Sydney woman Maria Exposto arrives home after escaping death penalty in Malaysia

A Sydney grandmother has arrived in Sydney after she was cleared by Malaysia's highest court of drug trafficking charges and escaped the death penalty.

A Sydney woman who spent nearly 5 years in a Malaysian jail on drug trafficking charges, including 18 months on death row, has arrived in Australia.

Maria Exposto, 55, had been sentenced to death by hanging for trafficking more than 1 kilogram of the illicit drug crystal methamphetamine, but was acquitted by the Federal Appeal Court of Malaysia on Tuesday.

The judges agreed with her lawyers that she was the victim of an online romance scam and did not know the drugs were in her bag.

"I am very happy," she told reporters. "I'm going to sleep like an angel. Like a little baby."

She thanked her family for their support during her 5-year ordeal, adding that she planned to go straight to the cemetery to visit her mother's grave.

Her son Hugo earlier this week said his family was delighted with the decision and they "had just tried to take it one day at a time and do everything we can" throughout the 5-year ordeal.

According to defence lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Ms Exposto fell prey to an internet romance scam initiated by a man who identified himself as "Captain Daniel Smith".

The man said he was a US soldier stationed in Afghanistan, a widower whose wife had died in a car accident and the father of a teenage son.

Mr Abdullah said the scam had lasted a couple of years and Ms Exposto had sent money to "Smith" before flying to Shanghai, China, in 2014. They intended to meet there, where he could request her help lodging documents for his retirement from the military.

"Smith" did not show up in China but an American who claimed to be his friend did.

Shortly before her scheduled departure, he asked her to take a black backpack, which Ms Exposto believed contained clothes, to Melbourne.

Drugs were found in the bag after Ms Exposto landed in Kuala Lumpur in transit on her way home to Sydney in December 2014.

She volunteered the bag for a search after a scan at the airport revealed "something green" and 1.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine was found.

She was acquitted by the High Court in December 2017 after the judge found she was scammed by her online boyfriend and was unaware she was carrying the drugs. However, the prosecution appealed the verdict.

In May 2018, an appeal court overturned the acquittal and Ms Exposto was sentenced to death by hanging for drug trafficking.

Malaysia has a mandatory death sentence for anyone found guilty of carrying more than 50 grams of a prohibited drug.

Tennessee reverses course, releases redacted execution manual with vague details

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee on Jan. 9 released a redacted version of its newly completed execution manual, blacking out sporadic job titles and team names throughout the notably trimmed-down document that now provides vague guidelines and omits previously detailed steps on carrying out the death penalty. The Tennessee Department of Correction initially refused to hand over the manual when pressed by The Associated Press, arguing that the state had to keep the entire manual secret to protect the identities of the executioner and other people involved.

Alabama schedules fourth nitrogen gas execution amid debate over method

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama has scheduled its fourth execution by nitrogen gas as critics continue to argue the new method needs additional scrutiny. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday set a Feb. 6 execution date for Demetrius Terrence Frazier, 52. Her office said the execution will be carried out by nitrogen gas. It is the state’s first scheduled execution of 2025. Frazier was convicted of killing Pauline Brown while burglarizing her Birmingham apartment in 1991.

Texas Continues Sending People to the Execution Chamber, Innocent or Not

Politicians like Greg Abbott and Ken Paxton project an image of being tough on crime, but they’re also tough on those who are innocent, per a year-end report from the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. The annual report tells the stories of several individuals who faced execution in 2024 despite evidence that they were not guilty of the crime for which they were convicted. Three of the eight people the state planned to execute this year tried to present evidence of innocence.

Oklahoma panel rejects man’s plea for mercy, paves the way for final US execution of 2024

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma panel on Friday rejected a plea for clemency for a man convicted of torturing and killing a 10-year-old girl as part of a cannibalistic fantasy, paving the way for him to become the 25th and final person executed in the U.S. this year. Three members of Oklahoma’s Pardon and Parole Board voted unanimously against clemency for Kevin Ray Underwood, who is scheduled to receive a lethal injection on Thursday, his 45th birthday.  An Indiana man, Joseph Corcoran, is set to die Wednesday for killing four men in 1997 in what would be the Hoosier State’s first execution in 15 years.

A Filipina drug convict on death row in Indonesia told AFP from prison Friday that her planned transfer was a "miracle", in her first interview since Manila and Jakarta signed an agreement last week to repatriate her. Mother of two Mary Jane Veloso, 39, was arrested and sentenced to death in 2010 after the suitcase she was carrying was found to be lined with 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds) of heroin, in a case that sparked uproar in the Philippines. Both she and her supporters claim she was duped by an international drug syndicate, and in 2015, she narrowly escaped execution after her suspected recruiter was arrested.
