Chicago Latino Community Reacts to El Paso Mass Shooting: ‘Words Matter’

Latinx community leaders in Chicago are telling President Donald Trump his words matter, days after a gunman targeted and killed more than 20 people, including many Hispanics, inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.

Members of the Latino Policy Forum, a Chicago advocacy organization, called on elected officials in Illinois and across the country to confront gun violence “through legislation and leadership,” while putting an end to hateful rhetoric directed at immigrants.

“The motives behind the El Paso massacre were clearly directed at Latinos, and they were rooted in the damaging rhetoric that came into the national spotlight when Donald Trump began using words like ‘invasion’ and ‘drug dealers and rapists’ to describe immigrants crossing the southern border,” they wrote in a statement Monday.

“The Latino Policy Forum joins other Latino leaders in Illinois and nationwide in holding our political leaders accountable for using divisive rhetoric. WORDS MATTER! We reject public language that inspires racist acts of barbarism, such as we saw in El Paso.”

That sentiment was shared by 12th Ward Ald. George Cardenas, who sent a tweet to the president Monday morning telling him “Word do matter! This is on you!”

Two more people who were shot in the Saturday attack died Monday, bringing the death toll to 22. On Sunday, nine people were killed in an unrelated mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

Investigators are focusing on whether the El Paso attack was a hate crime after the emergence of an anti-immigrant screed the 21-year-old gunman allegedly posted online shortly beforehand, which warned of a “Hispanic invasion” in the U.S.

Hate-crime charges could carry the death penalty. The suspect has been booked on state capital murder charges, which also carry a possible death penalty.

“I am heartbroken for El Paso and the victims of today’s horrific mass shooting,” Mexican-born U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-Illinois) wrote in a tweet Saturday to U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas). “My thoughts are with @RepEscobar. Too many lives and communities are torn apart by senseless gun violence. We must act NOW to end the gun violence epidemic and stand against white nationalism.”

The shootings in Texas and Ohio were the 21st and 22nd mass killings of 2019 in the U.S., according to the AP/USA Today/Northeastern University mass murder database that tracks homicides in which four or more people killed – not including the offender.

Including the two latest attacks, 127 people have been killed in mass shootings in the country so far this year.

Trump on Monday condemned weekend shootings in Texas and Ohio as barbaric crimes “against all humanity” and called for bipartisan cooperation to respond to an epidemic of gun violence, blaming mental illness and video games but made no mention of more limits on sales of firearms.

But those with the Latino Policy Forum say the president must do more.

“We reject public language that inspires racist acts of barbarism, such as we saw in El Paso,” they said. “It is time domestic terrorism is given the same attention as international terrorism.”

Japan | Death-row inmates' lawsuit targeting same-day notifications of executions dismissed

The Osaka District Court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit by death row inmates that claimed same-day notifications of executions violate the Constitution — the first ruling of its kind. The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit against the government in hopes of sparking a wider discussion on the rights of death row prisoners. They also sought ¥22 million in compensation and plan to appeal to a higher court.

Iran | Probable Child Offender and Child Bride, Husband Executed for Drug Charges

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 15 2024: Marjan Hajizadeh and Esmail Hassaniani, a couple sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.  Marjan is reported to have been 16 at the time of arrest, which IHRNGO is working to confirm. If verified, she will be the first child offender executed for drug charges since 2014. She was also a child bride forced into marriage.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear Arizona death penalty case that could redefine historic precedent

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments centering on an Arizona death row prisoner that could set new precedent to determining ineffective assistance of counsel.  A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Danny Lee Jones for the 1992 murders of Robert Weaver and his daughter Tisha, as well as the attempted murder of Weaver’s grandmother. A judge sentenced Jones to death for the two murders.

There’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430. When Louisiana legislators approved the use of nitrogen gas asphyxiation as an execution method during a second special legislative session in February, the move attracted national attention; not the least because it has only been used in the U.S. once. That’s when Alabama executed convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith on January 25th of this year. Now there’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430.

BAGHDAD, April 15 (Reuters) - Iraqi lawmakers postponed voting on Monday on a bill that includes the death penalty or life in prison for same-sex relations - a measure that diplomats from Western countries said could have serious consequences for Iraq's political and economic ties if it goes through. Parliament was in session on Monday, with the bill - an amendment to an anti-prostitution law - second on its agenda.

Alabama lawmakers reject bill which would allow some death row inmates to be resentenced

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - An Alabama House committee rejected a bill that would have impacted sentences for dozens of death row inmates. The proposal would have required courts to resentence people sentenced to death by a judge who overrode a jury’s recommendation of life in prison. That practice was outlawed in 2017. Representative Chris England passionately argued it should be retroactively applied for more than 30 death row inmates who were sentenced to death over a jury’s recommendation.
