Pakistan Halts Execution Of Mentally Ill Man

Pakistan's Supreme Court says it has halted the execution of a mentally ill prisoner who has spent more than 13 years on death row following pressure by human rights activists.

The court has suspended the execution of Ghulam Abbas "till further orders," spokesman Shahid Kambohyo said on June 17.

Abbas, 36, was scheduled to be hanged on June 18 for stabbing a neighbor in 2006.

Justice Project Pakistan (JPP), which campaigns against the death penalty, has filed an application to stay the execution after Abbas was denied medical attention by an independent psychiatrist and two government doctors.

Abbas has evidence of psychotic illness with hallucinations and behavior disturbances, Justice Project Pakistan said in a statement on June 16.

Pakistan is a signatory to the international Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD), which guarantees the dignity of individuals with disabilities.

Pakistan lifted a seven-year unofficial moratorium on the death penalty after Islamist militants killed more than 150 people, mostly children, at a school in the northwestern city of Peshawar in December 2014.

Pakistan has since executed 508 prisoners, according to the JPP.

There are over two dozen death penalty offences, including blasphemy, under Pakistani law.

According to an estimate, over 4,600 prisoners are on death row.

Iran sentences popular rapper to death for supporting Mahsa Amini protests

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a popular rapper jailed for more than a year and a half for supporting nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death, local media reported Wednesday . "Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth," the singer's lawyer Amir Raisian said, quoted by the reformist Shargh newspaper.

PETALING JAYA: Amnesty International Malaysia has commended Malaysia for the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and for imposing a moratorium on the execution of the death sentence, which has led to an overall decrease in the use of the death penalty by the courts. However, the rights group urged the government to extend the moratorium on executions until the death penalty is fully abolished.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Wednesday criticized Iraqi authorities for carrying out the death sentences of 13 men on the same day, saying the prisoners were denied fair trial, and expressed concern that many others had been executed in secret. Kansas - A judge has denied a request by death-row inmates Jonathan and Reginald Carr to be resentenced in a December 2000 crime spree that included five murders. The Carr brothers filed motions in November requesting a new hearing to determine whether the evidence supports the death penalty. Their lawyers also sought new pre-sentencing reports and journal entries in the case.
