Malaysian jailed for more than ten years for insulting Islam on social media

A Malaysian citizen was given more than 10 years in jail for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad on social media, police said Saturday, one of the country’s harshest such sentences in recent years.

Issues related to race, religion, and language are very sensitive topics in multiracial Malaysia. Critics say Malaysia’s traditionally tolerant brand of Islam is being eroded by increasingly influential Muslim hardliners.

The person found guilty, known only as Facebook user “Ayea Yea”, was jailed for 10 years and 10 months after pleading guilty to ten charges of anti-religious activity and the misuse of communications networks, said national police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

In a statement, Mohamad did not specify the number of charges for each offense but said they would be served consecutively.

Under Malaysian law, those found guilty of anti-religious activity can be punished with a jail term of two to five years.

The misuse of communication networks carries a maximum one year in jail or a fine of up to 50,000 ringgit (US$12,200), or both.

Three other social media users have also been charged with insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammed, as well as causing racial disharmony.

One who pled guilty will be sentenced next week, while the other two will be held without bail.

“The police advise the public not to misuse social media or communication networks by uploading or sharing any form of provocation that can touch racial and religious sensitivities,” Mohamad said.

In 1969, deadly riots erupted between members of the majority Malay community and ethnic Chinese, which still haunt the country.

The Osaka District Court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit by death row inmates that claimed same-day notifications of executions violate the Constitution — the first ruling of its kind. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments centering on an Arizona death row prisoner that could set new precedent to determining ineffective assistance of counsel.  A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Danny Lee Jones for the 1992 murders of Robert Weaver and his daughter Tisha, as well as the attempted murder of Weaver’s grandmother. A judge sentenced Jones to death for the two murders.

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 15 2024: Marjan Hajizadeh and Esmail Hassaniani, a couple sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.  Marjan is reported to have been 16 at the time of arrest, which IHRNGO is working to confirm. If verified, she will be the first child offender executed for drug charges since 2014. She was also a child bride forced into marriage.

There’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430. When Louisiana legislators approved the use of nitrogen gas asphyxiation as an execution method during a second special legislative session in February, the move attracted national attention; not the least because it has only been used in the U.S. once. That’s when Alabama executed convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith on January 25th of this year. Now there’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430.
