10 October 2018 - On this 16th World Day Against the Death Penalty, France reaffirms its opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances.

France is committed to the universal abolition of this unjust, inhumane and ineffective punishment and calls on all nations that still apply the death penalty to establish a moratorium on it with a view to its definitive abolition.

France welcomes the decision by Mongolia, Guinea and Burkina Faso to abolish the death penalty. 

It also welcomes Gambia’s ratification of the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aimed at abolishing the death penalty, as well as Guatemala’s abolition of capital punishment for ordinary crimes.

France reiterates its concern over the continued use of the death penalty in all too many countries.

France invites all nations to mobilize ahead of the Seventh World Congress Against the Death Penalty to be held from February 27 to March 1, 2019, in Brussels. 

It also calls on states to support the adoption of the resolution calling for a universal moratorium on the death penalty by the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

Iran sentences popular rapper to death for supporting Mahsa Amini protests

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a popular rapper jailed for more than a year and a half for supporting nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death, local media reported Wednesday . "Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth," the singer's lawyer Amir Raisian said, quoted by the reformist Shargh newspaper.

PETALING JAYA: Amnesty International Malaysia has commended Malaysia for the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and for imposing a moratorium on the execution of the death sentence, which has led to an overall decrease in the use of the death penalty by the courts. Iraq executes 13 on ‘vague’ terrorism charges

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Wednesday criticized Iraqi authorities for carrying out the death sentences of 13 men on the same day, saying the prisoners were denied fair trial, and expressed concern that many others had been executed in secret. A total of 13 prisoners were executed in Dhi Qars Nasiriyah central prison on Monday, and scores more have been executed since April 10, said the Amnesty report citing activists and lawyers of the death row prisoners.
