Maldives charges three minors amid death penalty controversy

COLOMBO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Maldives has charged three minors, one of whom 14, in a murder case since the controversial death penalty laws were introduced that could involve minors, local media reported on Wednesday.

The minors have been charged over the death of 21-year-old Hussein Waheed, who died from stab injuries to his chest on 24 December, 2013.

In this case, a 16-year-old is charged with murder, while another 16-year-old an accomplice to murder.

Judges are not entitled to offer leniency in murder-related offenses, a juvenile court spokesperson told local media newspaper Minivan News.

New death penalty regulations publicized in March allow children as young as seven to be executed for murder.

The regulations came partly in response to a spate of gang- related killings in capital city Mal in recent years.

Home Minister Umar Naseer said the regulations were a first step to "keeping peace and creating a safe environment for our citizens."
