Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the “West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

Bali Nine courier Scott Rush moved from Kerobokan Prison

Scott Rush
BALI Nine drug courier Scott Rush has been moved from Bali's Kerobokan Prison to another jail on the holiday island.

The move, which has been signed off by authorities, came at Rush's own request in a bid to escape "temptations" at the jail - including drugs.

The Bali Corrections Board chief, Sunar Agus, has told News Corp Australia that he approved the application because Rush had conveyed to him that he had good intentions to become a better person.

Rush was moved from Kerobokan Jail to Karangasem jail, in East Bali, early last night.

"Scott Rush sent an application to be moved to Klungkung prison. The reason is because he wants a more comfortable place to stay and he was eager to minimise any threat and many temptations including drugs," Mr Agus said.

"I have already signed the approval last week. But we decided to move him to Karangasem jail because it has bigger capacity than Klungkung jail."

Rush, who was initially sentenced to death for his role in the ill-fated 8kg heroin trafficking operation, later had his sentence reduced to life in jail.

He was one of nine young Australians arrested in 2005 who later become known as the Bali Nine.

He is the second member of the nine to be moved out of Kerobokan Jail, where they have all been held since their arrests.

Earlier this year Renae Lawrence was moved after authorities uncovered a plot and accused her of planning to kill prison guards and of plotting with another female prisoner who was also moved.
