Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Man hanged in public in Kazeroun, south of Iran

Iran Human Rights, April 20: One man was hanged in the town of Kazeroun, south of Iran according to official Iranian sources.

According to the local news website "Kazeroun-e-ma", a man identified as "Morteza Jokar" known as "Sardar" was hanged in public "Kenar Takhteh" near town of Kazeroun on April 16th.

The man was convicted of murdering 10 people and was sentenced to four times hanging in public, said the report. According to the report the sentence was implemented in front of the people and the prosecuter of Kazeroun.

After publishing several pictures from the public hanging the news website "Kazeroun-e-ma" was asked to remove the pictures by the prosecutor. The reason for removing the pictures where "negative consequences" from the international community.

On the same day three other people where hanged in public in the city of Shiraz, the capital of the Fars province which Kazeroun is located in.
