Albuquerque man charged with death of Uber driver Seliky Sanchez faces a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An 18-year-old man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges stemming from a carjacking and kidnapping that resulted in the death of an Uber driver.
On Aug. 7, Sheliky Sanchez of Albuquerque was picked up at his residence on Estrella Brillante Street NW just after 3 a.m. by an Uber ride driven by Joseph Andrus, an Albuquerque Police Department news release said.
Sanchez allegedly told APD detectives after his arrest that when they arrived at the drop-off location, which he picked randomly, he told Andrus to get out of the car and then shot him multiple times.
Under the federal indictment, Sanchez is charged with carjacking resulting in death, using a firearm during a violent crime and causing death, and kidnapping resulting in death.
Sanchez will remain in custody while awaiting trial, which has not been scheduled.
If convicted of any of the three charges, Sanchez faces a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Albuquerque field office investigated the case with the assistance of the Albuquerque Police Department.
