MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Singapore | Three teens arrested for drug trafficking could face mandatory death penalty

Three 19-year-old Singaporeans were arrested for drug offences on Sept 18, said the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on Sept 20.

One male teen and one female teen were arrested in a Rivervale Walk flat in Sengkang in the early evening. Various drug paraphernalia and a digital weighing scale were found in the bedroom of the male teen.

The duo were then escorted to a private residential unit near Hougang Avenue 7 rented by the male teen, where about 486g of Ice and 695g of cannabis were found.

In a follow-up operation, a Serangoon North Avenue 3 residence was raided and another male teen was arrested in a bedroom, where about 24g of Ice, various drug paraphernalia and $11,400 in cash were found.

The drugs seized are worth about $78,000.

“Yet another CNB operation saw the arrest of teenagers and, this time, with a large amount of drugs that could potentially feed the addiction of about 390 abusers for a week," said Senior Assistant Commissioner Sng Chern Hong, Deputy Director CNB (Policy and Administration).

"It is disheartening to see not just three young lives destroyed by drugs but also their families and loved ones becoming victims of drugs and drug abuse.”

If a person is found guilty of trafficking more than 250g of methamphetamine, or more than 500g of cannabis, he or she may face the mandatory death penalty.

Investigations are ongoing.
