MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Pakistani man executed in Saudi Arabia for smuggling drugs

Saudi Arabia enforces strict penalties for drug trafficking

Saudi Arabia executed Kitab Gul, a Pakistani citizen convicted of heroin smuggling, following a local court’s decision.

Despite appeals to higher courts, including the Supreme Court, which upheld the death sentence, Gul was executed today under a royal decree confirmed by the Saudi Ministry of Interior.

Gul was arrested for drug trafficking and sentenced to death by a local court.

Subsequent appeals to the higher courts, including the Supreme Court, upheld the death sentence.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior confirmed the execution, stating it followed a royal decree after the Supreme Court's decision.

The execution was carried out today.

Drug smuggling is considered a severe crime in Saudi Arabia, often resulting in the death penalty.

Traditionally, this penalty is executed by beheading, although other methods have been tested recently.

Gul's execution highlights the strict enforcement of drug laws in the kingdom.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia.
