MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Florida | Man who killed roommate’s girlfriend after ‘altercation’ in 2019 gets death penalty

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder will face death for killing his roommate’s 25-year-old girlfriend and putting her body in a plastic storage bin in 2019.

A judge sentenced Markas Fishburne to death for the murder of Aisha Levy Thursday after a jury voted 10-to-2 in February.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, investigators were called to the Green Tree Place Apartments on Princeton Square Boulevard after Fishburne’s roommate came home from work and found his apartment covered in blood.

Inside the apartment, JSO investigators found a woman, later identified as Levy, who they believed had been killed during a struggle.

Levy had a bright future in front of her, Marlow Levy, her father, and Dr. Anthonia Levy, her stepmother, told News4Jax.

According to Fishburne’s arrest report, Levy’s body had been wrapped up and stuffed into a plastic storage bin that was located in a closet.

Fishburne was taken into custody at the Jacksonville Greyhound Bus terminal and arrested shortly before he boarded a bus for Indiana.

Fishburne told investigators that he and Levy had an “altercation,” according to the arrest report.
