MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Saudi Arabia Executes 4 Ethiopians for Murder of Sudanese Man in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia has faced criticism for its high number of executions, with over 170 convicts meeting a similar fate in the previous year

Saudi Arabia announced the execution of four Ethiopian expatriates who were convicted of murdering a Sudanese man in the conservative kingdom.

The interior ministry stated that the convicts had participated in the attack and were involved in other criminal activities.

This execution adds to the high number of convicts who have met a similar fate in the kingdom, raising criticism of Saudi Arabia’s use of the death penalty and its strict application of Sharia law.

High Number of Executions

In 2022, Saudi Arabia executed 196 death row inmates, with 81 of them being executed in a single day, marking the highest number of capital punishments in the country in the last 30 years.

This has drawn criticism from human rights organizations and countries around the world.

Criticism of Saudi Arabia’s Use of the Death Penalty

The nonprofit ALQST, based in the United Kingdom, reported that at least 172 people were executed in Saudi Arabia throughout 2023, including four on New Year’s Eve.

This has been seen as a mockery of Riyadh’s promises to limit the use of the death penalty and has raised concerns about the country’s human rights record.
