USA | Death penalty remains an option for Buffalo mass shooter

There’s still no decision on whether the federal government will seek the death penalty for the man who shot and killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo Tops grocery store on May 14, 2022.

In a status conference Tuesday morning, prosecutors said the question of the death penalty has recently moved to the Office of the U.S. Deputy Attorney General. 

That’s the next step before it goes to the attorney general, who makes the final decision on seeking the death penalty. 

When that answer will come remains unknown.

Payton Gendron is already serving life in prison after pleading guilty to New York state charges for his racist mass shooting attack last year. 

He faces 27 federal counts, including hate crimes charges. He was not in court on Tuesday.  

Before the federal case can go to trial, attorneys will argue over defense motions regarding jury selection and a protective order to keep prosecutors from accessing records of Gendron while he’s been behind bars.  

The judge said with so many moving parts in the case, it’s impossible to move forward with a trial at this time.  

The next court date is scheduled for Jan. 12 in Buffalo.

Iran Executes Prisoner in Front of Seven-year-old Son

The Islamic Republic's judiciary has executed one more prisoner amid a surge in the death penalty. Nategh Hosseini was executed at Qazvin Central Prison on Saturday, reportedly in the presence of his seven-year-old son.  According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, Hosseini had been arrested three years ago on charges of alleged murder and subsequently sentenced to death.

Texas executed Ramiro Gonzales on Wednesday despite a stunning reversal from a psychiatrist who helped send him to death row 17 years ago.  Gonzales, 41, was killed by lethal injection as punishment for kidnapping, raping and murdering Bridget Townsend when they were both 18. At the time, Gonzales was struggling with drug addiction. He killed Townsend, his drug dealer’s girlfriend, while trying to steal drugs. He had turned 18 two months before the killing, making him barely old enough to be legally eligible to be sentenced to death.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana is one of 27 states where state-backed executions are still legal, but no one has been put to death in a Hoosier prison in 15 years. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Attorney General Todd Rokita look to change that.
