Indonesia | 14 years on death row: Timeline of Mary Jane Veloso’s ordeal and fight for justice

MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Iran | 3 Executed in Arak, Man hanged in Khalkhal, Execution in Qazvin

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 26, 2023: Three men sentenced to death for drug-related charges, were executed in Arak Central Prison.

According to HRANA news agency, three men were executed in Arak Central Prison on January 24. Two of the men’s identities have been reported as Omid Azani and Behnam (surname unknown) who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

The third man’s identity is unknown.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Hamed Heydari Executed for Murder in Khalkhal


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 26, 2023: Hamed Heydari, a conscript soldier sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for participation in murder, was executed in Khalkhal Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Khalkhal Prison on January 25. His identity has been established as Hamed Heydari who was sentenced to qisas for participation in murder.

An informed source previously told Iran Human Rights: “Hamed Heydar was a soldier in Khalkhal Prison and is accused of committing murder with another prisoner called Hassan [full name withheld by IHRNGO] who was under 18. This is while Hamed’s family insist that he didn’t commit the murder and was only with Hassan.”

Hamed Heydari was executed while the first defendant in the case was released after the victim’s family chose to forgo their right to execution.

Iran Human Rights previously reported that Hamed was at risk of execution in Khalkhal Prison.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Reza Aghaleh Executed for Murder in Qazvin


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 25, 2023: Reza Aghaleh who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, has been executed in Qazvin Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Qazvin Central Prison on January 25. His identity has been established as 56-year-old Reza Aghaleh who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Reza Aghaleh was on death row for eight years and had been transferred for execution three times. He had three children.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
