Indonesia | 14 years on death row: Timeline of Mary Jane Veloso’s ordeal and fight for justice

MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 29, 2022: Davoud Yousefi and Ebrahim Ajali, two men sentenced to death for drug-related charges, were executed in Karaj Penitentiary.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Karaj Penitentiary on December 28. Their identities have been established as 42-year-old Davoud Yousefi and 33-year-old Ebrahim Ajali.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Davoud Yousefi and Ebrahim Ajali were arrested around four years ago and were transferred for execution from Ward 4 of the prison.”

On December 17, Karaj Penitentiary prisoners had started a riot in protest to Mehdi Kamranifar being transferred for execution. 31-year-old Mohsen Mansouri was one of the prisoners who lost his life that day.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Hamidreza and Mohsen Nejati Executed for Murder in Karaj


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 29, 2022: Hamidreza Nejati and Mohsen Nejati, an uncle and nephew sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder in the same case, were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on December 28. Their identities have been established as Hamidreza Nejati and Mohsen Nejati who were sentenced to qisas for murder in the same case.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Mohsen Nejati was Hamidreza’s uncle and they had been sentenced to qisas for a murder in the same case.”

They were transferred for execution from Hall 1, Ward 1 of the prison.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Afghan Davoud Rahmatali Executed for Murder in Shiraz


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 29, 2022: Davoud Rahmatali, an Afghan national who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Shiraz Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, an Afghan man was executed in Shiraz Central Prison on December 28. His identity has been established as Davoud Rahmatali from Qondouz in Afghanistan.

He was sentenced to imprisonment for charges such as “possession and carrying prohibited weapons” and qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Davoud Rahmatali was arrested for murder around three years ago and sentenced to qisas. He was transferred for execution from the Hemat Ward in Shiraz Prison”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Man Executed for Murder in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 28, 2022: Hamid Ebrahimi who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on December 26. His identity has been established as Hamid Ebrahimi.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Hamid Ebrahimi was arrested for murder around four years ago and sentenced to qisas.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.


Man Executed in Iranshahr


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 26, 2022: Nezamodin Borhanzehi, a Baluch man sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Iranshahr Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Iranshahr Prison on December 24. His identity has been reported as 38-year-old Nezmodin Borhanzehi from Sourap village in Iranshahr.

He was arrested for murder in Kalat Sarbaz city around nine years ago and sentenced to qisas for murder by the Iranshahr Criminal Court.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
