MANILA, Philippines — The case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has spanned over a decade and remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving an overseas Filipino worker. Veloso was arrested on April 25, 2010, at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was sentenced to death in October – just six months after her arrest. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld the penalty in May 2011.

Australian mum faces death penalty as Malaysia confirms drug bust

An Australian woman faces a possible death sentence for drug trafficking in Malaysia after a prosecutor said Thursday a chemist's report confirmed the substance found in her bag was crystal methamphetamine.

Maria Elvira Pinto Exposto, a 52-year-old mother of 4, was arrested on December 7 at Kuala Lumpur airport with 1.1 kilograms (2.4 pounds) of the drug, also known as ice, court documents showed.

Prosecutor Hasifulkhair Jamaluddin told the magistrate's court that Exposto had been trafficking methamphetamine based on the chemist's report.

Magistrate Noor Hafizah Salim then ordered the case to be transferred to the high court.

Malaysia has a mandatory death penalty by hanging for anyone found guilty of carrying more than 50 grams of a drug.

Authorities previously said Exposto was trafficking 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Exposta, who was wearing a white blouse and black pants, looked nervous when the amended charge was read to her.

The defence is yet to enter a plea until the case reaches the high court since the lower magistrate's court has no jurisdiction to hear death penalty cases.

Later as she was being led out of the detention room in handcuffs, the Australian told AFP that she was innocent and nodded her head 3 times.

"Yes (I am innocent)," she said with a smile.

No date has been set for the high court hearing but defence lawyers said the trial could begin later this year.

"We are confident that we can show her innocence at the trial," Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, her counsel, told AFP.

Defence lawyers say Exposto was duped into carrying a bag -- which she believed contained only clothing -- by a stranger who asked her to take it to Melbourne.

She had travelled to Shanghai after falling for an online romance scam by a person claiming to be a US serviceman, according to lawyers.

Customs officers discovered the drugs stitched into the compartment of a backpack.

2 Australians were hanged in 1986 for heroin trafficking -- the 1st Westerners to be executed in Malaysia.

Few people have been executed in Malaysia in recent years.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma panel on Friday rejected a plea for clemency for a man convicted of torturing and killing a 10-year-old girl as part of a cannibalistic fantasy, paving the way for him to become the 25th and final person executed in the U.S. this year. Three members of Oklahoma’s Pardon and Parole Board voted unanimously against clemency for Kevin Ray Underwood, who is scheduled to receive a lethal injection on Thursday, his 45th birthday.  An Indiana man, Joseph Corcoran, is set to die Wednesday for killing four men in 1997 in what would be the Hoosier State’s first execution in 15 years.

Biden commutes roughly 1,500 sentences and pardons 39 people in biggest single-day act of clemency

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of roughly 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It’s the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, 1 in 5 prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press.

Indonesian President to grant amnesty to select prisoners while considering expediting execution of drug convicts

Jakarta, Dec 14 (IANS) Indonesian Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas has said that President Prabowo Subianto would grant amnesty to several categories of prisoners, including drug users and prisoners with long-term illnesses. According to Supratman, the move aims to reduce overcapacity in correctional facilities while addressing humanitarian concerns, Xinhua news agency reported. Prisoners suffering from chronic illnesses like HIV/AIDS and individuals with mental disorders are among those eligible.

Mother of two Mary Jane Veloso, 39, was arrested and sentenced to death in 2010 after the suitcase she was carrying was found to be lined with 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds) of heroin, in a case that sparked uproar in the Philippines.
